Keep the interface clean and uncluttered. Use intuitive navigation and layout. Minimize the number of clicks or steps required to perform tasks.

Standards are created for a reason, to make interconnectivity between applications or hardware easy. Problems begin to arise when developers do not adhere to standards. When users are affected by a lack of compliance with standards, they’ll face an unfriendly experience trying to get their tools to communicate with tools that do follow standards.

I've found that there is a 'myth' that user software development is at some point 'done.' In my experience, it's never done (until it's time to sunset / replace), so should be looked at as a continuous improvement exercise. Users will always find new ways they'd like to use the software, or areas which can improve. When companies approach software development as a fixed-timeline exercise, there is often disappointment - either at the time of software release (when undocumented requirements become obvious), or shortly down the road (when user needs have changed, and the software needs to be updated to meet the new needs). Approaching development knowing there will be iterations is a much better (and more realistic) method.

If the software's graphical user interface is not well thought out and properly executed, users will have to face issues in using that software. A well-designed graphic user interface can help overcome certain software drawbacks such as poor coding. As with the installation, an application’s update process should be easy. If updates are complex, users will more than likely skip the process. This can often leave behind a trail of bad results, as many updates patch security holes, memory leaks, and other problems. Updates need to be simple enough to ensure that users continue to benefit from the hard work of the creators of the software. When users don’t update, thus exposing issues, the software becomes less and less reliable and secure.
