The word “urgency” here is an interesting choice. What is urgent in the situation? Must part of the task be done before a funding source? Is someone with institutional memory preparing to retire? Is there a safety issue? Has pipe cracked flooding your rare book room? Sometimes these things can happen all at once… then you must do triages as factors change. The thing to consider (in my opinion) is to be somewhat proactive on an ongoing manner so that you are not in “reactive” mode. Then urgent is less common and big tasks get broken down before they become urgent.

Developing a sense of urgency and maintaining quality is a tall order to fill and requires a lot of effort. However, one key element to assist your sense of urgency is to have a strong, if not overwhelming, sense of ownership. Being driven to deliver the best quality service or product you can, ties together very closely to how you perceive yourself in the process. If you are a passive partner who holds no real risk of loss or reward toward the outcome, your motivation and investment will be minimal. There is an Aesop’s fable where a fox is chasing a hare but the hare gets away. As the hare escapes the fox shouts: I almost had you. In reply the hare shouted: There is a difference between chasing one’s dinner, and running for one’s life.
