1 Define the problem

In order to solve a problem, it is essential to define it accurately. This means understanding the root cause, scope, impact, and desired outcome of the issue. To assist with this process, the 5 Whys technique can be utilized. For instance, if your website is loading slowly, you can ask why five times in order to pinpoint the core of the problem. For example: why is the website loading slowly? (The server is overloaded.) Why is the server overloaded? (There are too many requests.) Why are there too many requests? (The website is popular.) Why is the website popular? (It offers valuable content and features.) Why does it offer valuable content and features? (We have a great team of developers and designers). By asking these questions, you can narrow down the problem and identify its key factors.

3 Evaluate and select

Once you have a list of ideas, you need to evaluate and select the best one for your situation. You can use criteria such as feasibility, effectiveness, cost, time, resources, and risks to compare and rank your options. You can also use tools such as SWOT analysis, pros and cons lists, or decision matrices to help you with this step. You should also consider the potential impact and consequences of your solution, both positive and negative, and how they align with your goals and values.

4 Implement and test

The final step is to implement and test your solution. You need to plan and execute the actions that are required to put your idea into practice. You should also monitor and measure the results and outcomes of your solution, using data, feedback, or other indicators. You should also test your solution for any errors, flaws, or gaps, and make adjustments as needed. You should also document and communicate your solution to the relevant stakeholders, such as your mentor, your boss, or your clients.

You should always reflect on your problem-solving experience and identify what worked well and what didn't. You should also seek feedback and guidance from your mentor, who can help you improve your skills, knowledge, and confidence. You should also celebrate your achievements and recognize your progress. By doing so, you will develop a problem-solving mindset that will help you tackle any challenge in any industry.

The more we learn, the better we get. I recommend spending 30 minutes in the field that you're in. There's no field that is known to us 100%. Moreover, reflecting on our past actions and evaluating ourselves can help us assess what went our way.

In my experience, the best way to problem solve agnostic to industry is to have a first principles approach. Break the problem down into small sets and find the right solution. This possibly doesn't need domain expertise, however, needs awareness, an open mind, and the ability to explore and be curious.
