Nothing can deter a resolution faster than placing blame on an operator and therefore shutting down what should be addressed as a learning exercise to prevent future issues. Well said. This is one of the effective way to achieve excellence. I had done it by organising Think Tank sessions where we gathered all the members of our team in one room. Each one was asked to think peacefully what comes up in their mind and write it down. No idea is silly and each one has no restriction on the number of ideas that they generate. At the end of the session each one is given away with some goodies from the Company. Believe it or not the best ideas can come from people who can be a new joinee or even with less experience in your team.

In most of the cases we have to restrict ourself in the first couple of options due to the time constraints. Especially in start up companies the manpower will be less to go for a vast brain stroming sessions also. There the generative designs will play a major role. Filtering from those designs with analysing the feasibility of manufacturing will give you a upper hand over the time constraints and manpower shortage.

Some tips on evaluation: 1. Make the score and weightage for each evaluation criteria beforehand. Else, bias may set in. 2. Use software and other tools for quick economic evaluation.

When testing alternatives, initial screening is usually necessary since validation of ideas and solutions also takes up time and resources. Through initial screening, you can narrow down your options and reduce the evaluation you need to do, this helps narrow down to your goal much faster instead of testing all alternatives.
