To foster a culture of accountability, it is imperative for the leadership team to effectively communicate the organization's mission, vision, and values, ensuring a seamless cascade throughout the entire organization. Subsequently, a collective commitment to openness, honesty, transparency, and mutual respect among all team members will naturally cultivate accountability for individual actions, behaviors, and results. In such an environment, everyone is inherently inclined to uphold integrity and character, translating into a shared commitment to meeting deadlines and achieving organizational objectives.

Deadlines should be viewed positively in order for it to be a culture, like the end of one chapter of an assignment. Honestly, some people thrive with deadlines. Here are some steps to set forward that positive culture of accountability in organisation: 1. Set clear goals and expectations, even drill down to eg the format of the report 2. Volume vs time- if it is a research-led initiative, be realistic with time vs volume of data that needs to be processed. Perhaps phase out the requirements and spread out the deadlines 3. Mid-way check in - this really helps the team or colleague who might be stuck not knowing the way forward or might be off-track mid way through. Checking in will ensure the final product is to requirements

How many times have you received a set of minutes, scanned the action points for your initials and focused on those items so you can update or close by the next meeting? Harness this very human behaviour to your advantage from the outset so people are crystal clear on their objectives, timescales and deliverables. Simply put, everyone should know what their success looks like.

Define project objectives, milestones, and individual roles explicitly, ensuring everyone understands their responsibilities. Align expectations with available resources and timelines, promoting a realistic view of what can be accomplished. Regularly communicate expectations, addressing any changes promptly. Feedback must be ‘SMART’ obviously but also constructive and, above all, honest otherwise you do a disservice to both yourself and your colleagues. Recognition doesn’t serve any purpose if it is merely unnecessary platitudes. It should be thought of as meaningful acknowledgement - which also has the undervalued benefit of being hugely motivating when executed correctly!

When managing a team is always important to show respect to show recognition at all times this shows how vulnerable the leader is how human the little is and how much empathy he shows with his team this is crucial because at this point what you're doing is you're creating a trust with your team therefore your team will always have your back. The feedback provided to your team should be customized to that person you can't have the same feedback method to everyone in your team it needs to be different because that person needs to feel connected to you and it's not about what you say to them it's about how you deliver that feedback.

Practically, this can be done by having a board where all the daily/weekly tasks, the responsibilities and timelines are indicated. Feedback should then be given by each team member based on the timeline and strictly upheld through the period of the initiative/project, otherwise there are consequences for example low scores on performance appraisals. This becomes a pattern within the team and with time, becomes part of the culture of an organization.

Empowering and trust go along together while you empowering your team members your building trust with them and trust is very important because you want to have them to have your back at all times and you want to make them feel that you have their back at all times this creates a bonding in teams and therefore results that get better.

Contrary to some popular belief great leaders rarely deliver themselves, instead they recognise their role is to enable their people to deliver for them. The best ones effectively delegate their authority for action (but vitally not the responsibility for that action) and operate as the enabler. You set the standard that others gauge their performance from. Behave in a way that you would expect your boss to be with you. Above all, DON’T BE A HYPOCRITE! No-one takes kindly to being called out for behaviour they see from you. I don’t care if you own the business, nothing destroys team goodwill and application faster than, for an illustrative example, being picked up for being late by someone who’s habitually late themselves….

In my experience accountability starts at the top. It’s also more elusive than you might think in today’s business world. I read in a Harvard Business Review survey that almost 50 percent of executives are terrible at accountability. I don't think that's to surprising, because accountability isn’t something you can do halfway. No executive or business owner can be “sort of accountable.” It requires a commitment from the top and adoption throughout the organization. I thnk accountability is the ability of a person to provide focus on an initiative, make the necessary decisions and garner support from their organization to achieve success.

For instance, setting personal deadlines and adhering to them showcases commitment and integrity, inspiring others to do the same. Talking about myself - I emphasize the significance of personal accountability and collective responsibility. This approach instills a sense of commitment among team members, fostering a culture where meeting deadlines is a shared goal.

When setting goals and objectives work with the person actually delivering them and allow them to make commitments on their deliverables. Where the commitments initially do not meet the targets that you have been asked to achieve or that the organisation requires you need to negotiate with the person delivering those outcomes, as it may require some careful consideration of their workload. The effort to manage trade-offs in order to achieve the critical deliverables is worth it as long as you are making strategic decisions on those factors.

Keep a eye on the wellbeing of your teams. Content ones operate far better than stressed ones, and here’s the thing about stress… It is caused by a perceived absence of options, and it varies from person to person. As a senior leader there is every chance someone working for you may be struggling for reasons that you don’t consider important or could make disappear easily. If you can discover those, and address them, you will unleash potential you maybe didn’t know existed!
