To make the process faster, more and more tasks are offloaded to and executed directly by the processor. Certain operations, which are defined by the graphics pipeline are mirrored into the hardware design. So, if there is a culling operation, or a geometric shading required to be done - the special processor unit does it. These special processors are called GPUs. GPUs are designed such that they can execute on more than one single data at an instance. CPUs on other hand are designed to operated on a single data at an instance.
