In many cases, expectations are more important than the reality: often users are happy to wait for query to run, if they know they can run multiple queries at the same time. It is therefore important to be able to have a direct channel with users with easy-to-raise incidents and transparent communications. UC is also important: if a user has to go through too many clicks or admin to run access a dataset, then no matter how fast the tech is - they will not be happy!

Another thing that I have found useful, is to continue training users reminding of coding best practices. Sometimes you will surprised by how many database users (me included!) hold on to bad habits. For example, filtering a database before transforming it could improve the speed by 100% (you will be surprised by how many people forget this!l). Another suggestion is to to rely on "select *" as little as possible - you do not need all of those fields!!
