I agree. Patient’s dignity is important. It is self-worth. As a healthcare provider, you are responsible to keep your patients safe and help them feel better in a place they don’t know. You are there to help them cope. I believe that in a culture where there is respect patients perform better and they are more innovative and display greater resilience.

It’s quite simple yet it is often overlooked when assumptions are made or people have misguided perceptions. Ask them through what ever expressive or communicative medium they can understand. Even if they have appointed guardians or family and friends what is best for them, it is imperative that you seek out the clients interests directly. Learn to communicate in their language, tone and style. Always assume they have the capacity to engage and communicate through their own style. The biggest challenge people have with communicating with people with special needs or a disability is focusing on their abilities It is after all about them and not someone else’s perception, belief or interpretation of what they think they might like to do.

It is important to always remember to assume capacity. To speak purposefully and plainly in a normal voice. Do not treat adults like children. Remember they have likely spent many hours in hospitals and trust may be a significant issue. Be a human being and remember compassion, patience and empathy.

Resources may be scarce in some areas, while ample in others. The responsibility of identifying other services that a patient could benefit from should not be left solely to the doctor or nurse. There have been instances where my team members have noticed before anyone else that a patient was having difficulty reading a menu or getting around. It's crucial that we all work together to provide the best possible care during their stay and offer all the resources available to make their discharge home as successful as possible.

Collaboration is key to providing not only immediate medical care but also for continuity of care and proper follow up. It is essential to be aware of the resources we have available to us as providers to help care for our patient’s. If we know who/what we have available we are already a step ahead in providing the best care possible to patients with disabilities. Being able to collaborate with our resources will also allow us to provide supportive resources for the patient in a post hospital setting.

Observe them with respect and in most cases it will become apparent how they interact with the world around them. If there is a caregiver, ask them for input. This entire article, and how these questions/concepts are framed perfectly capture the illogical fallacy of generalised ‘accessible’ design theory. To assume because someone is disabled, they therefore require addition considerations is poor practice. None of these 6 sections are specific to the needs and concerns of patients with disabilities, and how it should be reflected in their personalised health care. Point 2 is literal ableism. Most of the population don’t have strong health literacy and therefore shouldn’t all these just be standard practice?

Yes but there are major issues for deaf people is that the NHS very often don’t pay attention to their medical notes - normally it has deaf written on front of the notes, need more information like what format of communication they prefer to use. When they don’t notice the deaf aspect on their notes they send out appointments with either of the following; A telephone appointment- how good is that!!!! A face to face appointment but neglect to mention if an interpreter or appropriate communication support has been arranged for the appointment leading to either the deaf person turning up expecting an interpreter and only to find there wasn’t one booked as deaf person may not know how to contact to ask for one to book - to be continued

As a patient advocate, I'm genuinely baffled and trying to ascertain why a patient with disabilities is highlighted. To separate those "with disabilities" in its own box is part of the problem in my opinion. If any patient is seeking medical care, they deserve to be communicated with in a manner in which they can understand and participate.

Given the growing distrust of medicine and worries about insurance, finances, etc, and overall low health literacy - not approaching every patient with kind open communication, clear plain language, and closed loop communication would be a miss. This must be our approach across the board and find individualized ways to each persons care - and an EMR to support communication across providers of those preferences.
