You might want to check that the publications they sent you as a portfolio really belong to them. You can either put them through a plagiarism checking software or simply put a paragraph through Google in "-s. This way, Google will search for the exact text and you can see under whose name it was first published. Remember that many freelancers create content for sites where their name is not added to the post; question it if in doubt.

I'd start out by asking how this person has structured their work in the past, and how the teams they have worked in have done things. And what their preferences are. And I'd ask for examples, or about the examples listed on their cv. To take an analogy from dating, telling someone what you're looking for enables them to tell you what you want to hear, regardless of the substance of what they are offering.

Portfolios and resumes can only go so far. If I have to work with somebody the soft skills are the most important thing to consider. It's better to work with someone who's personable and coachable and has next to no experience, than with a very skilled professional who doesn't show an ounce of empathy.

Consider collaborating with individuals whom you admire or want to learn from. Take risks and reach out to someone by suggesting a potential project or article. I reached out to someone in the field whom I still needed to meet but wanted to get to know, and we ended up working together on several projects.
