They can be mitigated with services that provide load balancing, clusters, sinkholes, and blackholes.

Denial attacks have made a lot of news in the last many years for good reason. The attack is not exceptionally sophisticated for the amount of problems it can cause. Preventative efforts such as type and volume limitations on critical systems are good for systems that have expectations they may come under attack. Software solutions are also a great way to deal with these attacks, both from a detection and prevention view. The most important thing to remember is these tools only work if you implement them.
