Biodegradable products are those that can be broken down by natural processes into harmless substances, such as water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter. Designing biodegradable products can reduce the environmental impact of waste, conserve resources, and support the circular economy. But how can you design products that are biodegradable? Here are some tips and examples to help you.
The first step is to select materials that are biodegradable, such as natural fibers, paper, wood, or bioplastics. Bioplastics are plastics made from renewable sources, such as corn, starch, or sugar cane, or from biodegradable polymers, such as polylactic acid (PLA) or polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). Biodegradable materials should also be free of toxic additives, such as heavy metals, phthalates, or bisphenol A (BPA), that could harm the environment or human health.
Bio degradable infact means an object which mixes with the earth quickly without any artificial external environment. However if you are designing for longer life spans you cannot move towards bio degradable materials because any product has to meet its durability and reliability criteria. Packaging materials are objects with very shorter lifespan, especially the polymer films ( LDPE/ PP polymers derived in an oil refinery). These polymers are now made from bio based sources, which will mix and degrade with earth easily than traditional polymers with certain external conditions like temperature. For more durable products Another way of reducing carbon footprint is to use some percentage of bio content like natural fillers with the polymer.
The best approach is to go with a circular economy. The method followed for my house construction includes plastering with the excavated earth, and all furniture, doors, windows are made from reclaimed wood, and steel roofs, etc. However, the disadvantage of this is scalability. For tall towers and residential apartments, this concept may not be suitable to a large extent. Another option is crafting an entirely different material that can be used as an alternative. For example, paving blocks from waste plastic , bioplastics, etc. Economic viability is a big question in this context.
Developing a biodegradable product requires understanding of its entire lifecycle, raw material extraction, manufacturing, functionality, and end-of-life disposal. Understanding of functionality of the product is crucial for proper material selection. The chosen material shall be capable enough ( in strength, machinability, stability, etc.) so that the product performs its intended function effectively. Achieving 100% biodegradable product may be impractical. Therefore, the goal is to minimize non-biodegradable components, promoting replaceability or reusability of parts. Conducting R&D is essential to assess the extent of material biodegradability. This entails rigorous testing and evaluation across diverse environmental conditions.
Everytime when mentioned biodegradable products, one of the important thing we should think about is will it be true biodegradable rather than it is only a slogan. So we have to think about from the raw materials at the begining when you set up a project. Using sustainable materials such as FSC paper, recycled paper, molded pulp, PLA, PCR, refillable packaging solutions and so on. Besides, adding varnish on printed paper rather than lamination with plastic film which helps to recycled the paper much easier.
