How can you design online courses for urban innovation and entrepreneurship?

Consider the background, expertise, and learning preferences of your target audience. Tailor the course content to meet the needs of participants with varying levels of experience. Choose topics that are relevant to urban innovation and entrepreneurship. This could include urban planning, sustainable development, business modeling, funding strategies, and more. Use a variety of multimedia elements such as videos, presentations, case studies, and interactive activities to keep participants engaged. Incorporate real-world examples and success stories.

In my perspective, drawn from years of experience, educational resources should not only offer high-quality information but also portray real-life scenarios. These scenarios should encourage students to engage in critical thinking and devise solutions for the challenges presented. Equally significant is the alignment of these situations with the everyday experiences of the students.

I'm a big fan of looking for innovation in other industries or adapting ideas used in other contexts/purposes to your own. It is rare that a problem has never been solved before! A great example is how Duo Lingo found inspiration in the addictive nature of social media engagement and applied their techniques for a positive purpose - increasing interaction and engagement for its language learning app.

Just as educators encourage their students to learn from each other and provide an environment conducive to peer & social learning, designers of courses and educators do so as well. It is important to make sure that collaborators are diverse - not just educators from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and institutions, but people outside of education who can provide different skills, perspectives and ideas.

Learning about innovation and entrepreneurship is very much an experiential and experimental endeavour. This means we need to learn not only from what has worked, success stories and "best practices" but also from "failures". In fact, failures are often the best learning experiences. The more you've failed means the more you've tried new things, experimented, and which means the more you've experienced the process of innovation and entrepreneurship!

Assess the needs and know what your students have and don’t have in terms of resources and learning no material. Make sure to be aware of their socioeconomic background in order to develop strategies that don’t go beyond their socioeconomic abilities, and if not in fact create ways that in vest in what they already have
