How can you design mobile applications for social good?

In my 6+ years of mobile app development, I've learned the key is understanding the problem and your user base in depth. It's not just about adding cool features; it's about real solutions. Talking to real users and getting their insights is crucial. In the end it's the users that matter who are going to experience your app. Always keep them in mind.

Commencing with social good in mind, the first step is to meticulously define the problem you aim to address and propose a solution. Engage with communities, conduct research, and ensure a deep understanding of the societal issue at hand. This groundwork forms the foundation for a purpose-driven mobile application.

To make a mobile app that does good for society, start by understanding a problem you want to solve. Use research, interviews, or observations to figure out the challenges people face. Clearly outline what your app aims to achieve and set specific goals. A problem statement helps summarize the current situation, what you want to achieve, and why it matters. This step lays the foundation for designing an app that truly makes a positive impact.

My Idea for developing an app for social welfare would be developing some support app for street dogs or animals who need care or may be open for adoption. It can provide a medium for users to make donations for feeding stray dogs or animals.

I have launched 300+ prototypes and apps over the past 7 years. Only fews apps are profitable at the end. You really need to solve a problem and offer the right solution. Focus on bringing the solution and avoid other features is key in the first steps because at the end users are spending time on the app and obviously paying for the core feature. Getting feedbacks is key, so even if the app is not live I recommend to test the marketing through paid ads to understand if the message hit the users.

Aligning with the principles of human-centered design, delve into understanding the users and their unique needs. Leverage empathy in this phase, conducting interviews and surveys to gain insights. This user-centric approach ensures that the mobile application is not only well-intentioned but also genuinely addresses the requirements of its beneficiaries.

That way, you can make sure you've identified any issues before it hits the masses. Last, make sure your infrastructure is scalable to way above your predicted needs. Nothing is worse than having a big successful launch full of error messages and server timeouts!

Keep in mind that test and evaluate should be a task that needs to be done constantly. Adding this step as an ongoing task will help the improve the product in increments.

A/B testing is employed for different design elements, analyzing which versions engage users more effectively. Accessibility testing is crucial; I ensure the app meets standards like WCAG. Once your app design gets a thumbs up, it's showtime! Use coding languages, frameworks, and app stores to bring your app to life. Think about security, privacy, and how it performs—like making sure it's a smooth ride for users on various devices. It's like launching a well-prepped spaceship into the app galaxy!

Develop the mobile application with a focus on scalability and accessibility. Choose a platform that caters to the target audience's devices and operating systems. A couple of points when it comes to monitoring and keeping the app updated either by fixing known bugs or delivering new features: - Always add feature flags that can be switched on/off as required. This could save us from sudden crashes in features when observed - Try out multiple UIs for the same feature by developing different strategies to target specific users using A/B Testing - Keep Monitoring the App rating and App reviews, this is something that gives the user a 1:1 touch and brings more connectivity with the user - Monitor the user journey by using some analytics tools like Mixpanel, Clevertap, and many more to choose from. This helps in understanding user behavior and where the user spends more time on the product

The life cycle of a socially impactful mobile application doesn't end with deployment. Establish robust monitoring mechanisms to track user engagement and app performance. Regularly update the application based on user feedback, technological advancements, and evolving social needs to maintain its relevance and effectiveness."

Always measure! This way you will be able to understand your user’s needs and meet their expectations by adding new features that adds real value.

Incorporating collaboration and community feedback is a vital step in designing mobile applications for social good. This involves engaging with the community or groups you are aiming to help, gathering their insights and feedback throughout the development process. Make sure you have some tool to capture crash reports in production like Firebase Crashlytics for example. This way you will be able to identify issues in production and fix them in the next release of your app.

I think that developing the app and be live on app stores is just the beginning. There are some many apps and competition plus so many advertisers spending millions of dollars on marketing their apps that if you don’t think marketing your out. When launching the app you need to understand 2 things: marketing potential (the whole purpose of an app is to ne scalable worldwide) and the product potential (if your product doesn’t convert with the core product I doubt that it will in the future.
