This really depends on the subject matter and sustainability in that type of curriculum. A sustainable curriculum does not mean having a curriculum that never changes for over 20 - 30 years. In defining your vision for a sustainable curriculum, you are building a strong foundation that can be revamped and upgraded on an on-going basis. And allows for that type of progress.

The purpose statement should cover what is being done regarding sustainability curriculum design globally, identifying the learning gaps or connectors and what the students need to know and do at the end of the programme.

The second step is to integrate sustainability across disciplines and levels of study. Sustainability is not only a subject matter, but a cross-cutting theme that connects different fields of knowledge and skills. You can design your curriculum to incorporate sustainability in various ways, such as embedding sustainability concepts and issues in the core courses and modules of your discipline or program, offering interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary courses that explore sustainability from multiple perspectives and approaches, providing opportunities for students to engage in sustainability-related projects, research, or experiential learning activities, and encouraging students to choose sustainability-related topics for their assignments.

A useful approach would be to develop a theory of change to identify sustainability assumptions, sequence the learning design, and determine the programmatic monitoring and evaluation criteria. This approach will identify the indicators for measuring the success of the curriculum and ensure that the curriculum design addresses issues of causality and not the symptoms of the sustainability effect. This approach influences the programme objectives, competencies; learning outcomes, activities, assessments and evaluation criteria. Most importantly, it creates a pathway for inter/multi/transdisciplinary engagement. A theory of change provides a useful map for stakeholder engagement.

This hits the point. Gone are the days of the cookie cutter mould. We have set fire to the boxes we were placed in. Each person is unique and powerful because they have painstakingly created their own learning style. Educational institutions that foster this and create an environment where it is not only respected by actively encouraged will increase their mindshare.

4 Assess sustainability competencies

The fourth step is to assess sustainability competencies that reflect the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that your students need to develop and demonstrate in relation to sustainability. Sustainability competencies can help you measure the effectiveness of your curriculum and provide evidence of your students' learning and achievement. To do this, you should define intended learning outcomes and assessment criteria, use a variety of assessment methods and tools that capture the complexity and diversity of sustainability, align these methods with teaching and learning activities, ensure the validity, reliability, and fairness of the assessment process and results, and provide feedback that enhances students' learning and development.

Beyond assessing competencies, there is opportunity to explore ways that communicate to students and society outside HE about achieving such competencies. This can be done by creating programs in sustainability (such as Bachelors in Sustainability, minor in Sustainability within other programs, etc.) or with badges (such as certificates of completion, industry-relevant credentials as top-ups, etc.). This helps communicates that sustainability is both important as well as recognized for its level of ability within the students.

This process can help ensure the relevance, quality, and impact of your curriculum design and implementation. After analyzing the results, draw conclusions and recommendations for improvement based on established evidence and criteria. Implement the improvement actions and monitor their effects and outcomes with appropriate indicators and measures.
