How can you design functional architecture for all users with limited resources?

"Know thy users" - absolutely, but you need someone to translate and structure their diverse and fragmented input to usable information. Product Owners, Solution Managers and similar roles have a key part to play in applying an architecture vision on a case-by-case basis. Having a community of practice for those involved in ideation and validation is a big help in this regard.

Begin by thoroughly understanding the diverse needs of the users who will interact with the space. Consider factors such as age, mobility, cultural background, and socioeconomic status.

Do not undervalue the ROI of first hand experience. Don't get your information about what your users do from someone else, actually go and talk with your users. Want to build software for a government organization that supports at risk adolescents? Sign whatever NDAs or confidentiality agreements you need to, and watch them use your software in the field. Or at least understand their problems that you're trying to solve with software. Getting second hand information is a great way to increase the probability that you'll deliver the wrong product.

Try to think with the logic from someone you do not feel related to. Pretend you are that person, then go through your design. Does it work? Probably not. Then re-design thinking of all the things you wouldn't do, but someone else might, and make that possible too.

You have to understand the environment where your software is being used, before you lay down the first line of code. Is your program going to be used in rural Kansas where Internet connectivity is not a universal constant? You better make sure you're using GUIDs and have an offline sync strategy. Is your software used by nurses that don't have a desk and have to settle for their substandard laptop monitor, with the laptop literally on their lap? Try resizing your UI to be the same dimensions as them, with your laptop on your lap. There is no substitute for getting into the head of a user, living a day in their shoes.

Constraints begin with the Architect’s ability to think outside the box by applying creativity, experience and exposure. Lack of courage to deviate from the norms could be a major constraint. Lack of adequate skills that are required for expressing ideas and dreams of the Architect are constraints

Design spaces that serve multiple functions to maximize their utility. For example, a community space could be used for meetings, classes, and events, catering to a variety of user needs.

This may be controversial ?? but I like a "McDonalds Solution." Sometimes, there is only one true answer to a problem. But, humans being humans, we like the freedom of choice. So if you need to come up with alternatives, find something that is not viable or not practical. Sometimes when exploring the reasons why it isn't an ideal choice, you realize that your initial "right answer" would be insufficient. Play out the conversation in your head, pretend you are on the other side and come up with objections.

Design a flexible spatial layout that allows for easy navigation and adaptability. Minimize obstacles and ensure that spaces can be easily rearranged to accommodate different needs.

Involve the peoples in the design process to ensure that their perspectives and needs are taken into account. This participatory approach can lead to more informed and inclusive design decisions.
