I agree fully with Rondell Pattersons post regarding a basic curriculum structure. As technologies keep developing I think it is important to teach skills from a non-technology related perspective (tied to a specific software). So concepts, conventions and understanding are transferrable despite changes in technology.

Once you’ve chosen a given engineering category, such as live sound, recorded sound or broadcast sound, try to identify the educational leaders in that category. A live sound specialty has a very different skill set than a mix or tracking engineer in recorded sound. Keep in mind some of the best paths look more like apprenticeship programs, or are combinations of formal school with hands on skill development. One easy way to help you find the right path is to ask your dream job where and how they recruit. Remember more jobs are won by relationship than by any other method. Volunteer or work for free if it helps you meet the right people!

I have found a lot of educational supporters for independent musicians. Many of them have their own music academies and offer a good amount of freebies. Their classes are also periodically offered at special discounts.

While the classroom is a great place to establish concepts, Intern at a studio, make a FOH engineer friend whom make's a band sound great to you, or introduce yourself to someone whom works with transistors and capacitors at a repair shop. Remember hearing is an entirely subjective experience. Yes, we all hear on similar spectrums, but what we interpret from that hearing will always be different in how it makes an individual feel. I quickly realized that audio engineering requires a balanced approach. Experimenting with different audio software, recording my own music, and analyzing professional mixes helped me bridge the gap between theory and practice, solidifying my understanding.

I noticed in my career length in the audio industry a lot of newbie always mixed up between LOUDNESS and CLARITY. to me loudness = dB Clarity = EQ sadly the basic theory was not master and understand. 1 individual can be 100% in theory but does it abke to apply on real world?

I was always better at understanding theory in a practical scenario. I learned a lot more from actually being 'hands on' than I did reading about proper practices. That's just the way I work and I have no doubt that the theoretical side of my studies played a huge part in my understanding of my trade, I just always seemed to learn more by actually doing, rather than reading. Both play their part equally, but I do think some people are academic in their approach, and others are practical and more hands on. ????

As early as possible, get students hands-on during productions. Once they experience a problem or can't figure out how to get what they want with the tools they have, they will seek the "why" and the theoretical basis for the answer to their quest.

I can’t disagree with the above statement. Practice and be part of everything you can so you get as much exposure as you can.

Analyze songs from different genres. Take notes on the structure and instrumentation. Write down as many observations as you can. See if you can apply some of the elements to your songs.

Initially, I focused on music production in my preferred genre. However, I soon discovered the benefits of exploring different styles. Experimenting with sound design for film and podcasting opened my eyes to the vast potential of audio engineering beyond music production. This broadened my skillset and exposed me to new creative possibilities.

I feel like in our modern day and age, it's easy to dissect a mix down to its stems and how they're leveled, compressed, and even how the reverb sounds, tools like Inbuilt FL Studio stem separator, iZotope's RX, and even the newly updated Serato Sample, it’s easier to do more active and attentive listening by isolating each part separately using these tools now.

You absolutely need to have an open mind in order to expand your viability. Like any other industry, if you are closed off and pigeon hole yourself into being really good at one style of work, others who are more adaptable, will fill those voids. Ongoing education, in a rapidly changing Industry such as ours, will set you apart from others.

The fields which require audio are so diverse that you have to appreciate each individually as it will translate to a more well versed engineer entirely. My example would be how a background in film led me to the understanding that two identical visual tracks can convey totally separate feelings based solely off the audio track it is synced with, and vice versa; which led me to the realization that the imagery your audio is paired with does have an effect on the listener, whether that be the music video associated with the track or even simply the album cover artwork.

Keeping up with trends and innovations means our students today are ready for the job market of tomorrow. There is nothing more depressing than, perhaps, knowing that your skills are out of date. Educators should strive to prepare their students based on the most current and emergent technologies. This will prepare the students for market shifts and ways to approach and implement best practices and adopt new standards before they being behind.

The audio engineering landscape is constantly evolving. To stay relevant, I actively seek out news and information about new technologies, software updates, and emerging trends. Following industry blogs, attending workshops, and connecting with other professionals allows me to learn from their experiences and adapt my skills to the evolving industry.

With keeping up with the latest of technologies or devices, it is easy to get overloaded with to much stuff to try out. I tend to prefer to use reasonable existing soundsytems or recording devices and explore their possibilities and potential to create the sound requirements. I think we all love new special effects and enhancements. If you want to recreate that particular sound , a good ear and trying out various mixes does well.

Based off my own personal experience it is important to constantly be experimenting with new softwares because you never know when the program you’ve been using for 15 yrs will suddenly be unsupported.

Practical experience trumps all. In the live sector, students will spend upwards of ￡40,000 to learn a great deal of theory and then come out and work in an unknown environment with no health or safety preparation. I'm talking from experience - I was a manual handler for a while before I became a live sound engineer. Covering a great span of material is good (my degree was in Music Technology). Still, more emphasis on finance, mental health, and building relationships with others in more or less technically demanding roles are all crucial yet neglected. We need to spend as much time with our tools as possible, ideally accompanied by our potential collaborators (the engineer with the band), under the supervision of our instructors.

By understanding all aspects of the technology. I also feel understanding where it all came from as I was a major part of that. Learning the difference from hardware and software. By recoding everything you can, including bands and orchestras. Lean video to as music is needed for it. Learn the computer needs and that is very lacking by many. And know which audio interfaces are best. Most if it now is software and learn all aspects of it even if you do not use. I find most schools are 5-10 years behind the times. Another good way is apprenticeship in a good size studio for free. If you learn all of this you will have a lot better knowledge of what you’re doing and not doing. It’s a gift not something anyone can do properly. Be blessed.

Practice. Practice. Practice. Make sure you keep copies of every article written about you in the media. People have short memories so when you show them your validation from various media your value goes up. Make sure you teach what you know to other people. You would have a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Make sure your social media output is consistent with your brand. It is the first thing that people look at if they want to know about you. This is a long game. Work at it and have patience.
