How can you design an EdTech platform for offline use?

1. Content Caching and Downloading: Allow users to download course materials, lectures, quizzes, and other educational content while they are online. 2. Progress Syncing: Develop a system to track the user's progress and sync it once they are back online. 3. User Authentication and Access Control: Implement a secure authentication system that allows users to access downloaded content offline without compromising security. 4. Offline Functionality: Create offline modes for different features like reading materials, watching videos, taking quizzes, etc. Design intuitive interfaces that inform users about their offline status and guide them on what features are available offline.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have a lot in common. SIDS comprise of the smallest carbon footprint yet are impacted the most from climate change. Teachers from SIDS are leaving for more developed countries leaving the marginalized behind. Knowing the problems of the target audience (SIDS in this case) will drive suitable and sustainable solutions.

The scope for an offline ed-tech platform must focus on accessibility and sustainability. It should address the needs of learners in areas with limited or no internet access. The scope should include essential learning outcomes, target demographics, and specific constraints related to offline delivery.

A question to be asked is whether an off-line platform is needed? Is this an online course you download to a local device or is it something else? What (if any) any sort of training tracking is needed in an online LMS?

In the initial phase of designing an offline-friendly EdTech platform, it is crucial to meticulously define the platform's scope and purpose. This involves outlining specific learning goals and desired outcomes, understanding the distinct needs and preferences of the target users, and identifying key functionalities to address these requirements. Determining how learning progress and performance will be measured and evaluated is integral to shaping the platform. By addressing these fundamental questions, the development team can discern essential and optional features, enabling them to prioritize elements crucial for offline accessibility.

Selecting technology involves finding robust solutions for content storage and playback. Possible technologies include pre-loaded tablets, USB drives, and SD cards. The chosen technology must be durable, low-cost, and have a long battery life to be effective in varied environments.

The interface should be intuitive and user-friendly, considering the diverse age and tech proficiency of users. It should allow easy navigation through content, provide offline progress tracking, and support interactive elements that engage learners without online connectivity.

Content selection is essential and it should be relevant to the learning goals. Though it is a little bit tough but if we follow the proper strategy it will work. First I will consider core concepts, fundamental lessons, and interactive elements that don't heavily depend on constant internet access. Then I will focus on providing a well-rounded and comprehensive offline learning experience to ensure that users can engage meaningfully even without an internet connection.

Engagement strategies might include gamification, interactive quizzes, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. Community involvement, feedback mechanisms, and incentives can also play a significant role in maintaining high engagement levels.

Something to remember is that schools almost never have everything figured out and unfortunately IT can be one of the main challenges facing schools, especially as we were leaning into educational technology and all of the developments related to AI. Many of the LMS that I've seen used have required us to be online, and that compose a very serious risk for a school because there may not be any way for them to access their records unless they have internet access. Now generally speaking, there's always some way to work around this and to find internet, but genuinely nobody wants to take that chance. There should always be some way to view the records that exist on the platform while offline.
