All economic models are flawed in one way or another. Forecasting is difficult, especially since COVID upended many long held assumptions. My first talk with my later boss’s boss at Lehman was essentially an economics interview. He knew I had no training (as a mathematician) but a big interest. Him - tell me how the existence of social security has lead to the breakdown of the American family. Me- I don’t agree with that. Him- ok, tell me about family structure in agrarian societies. Me- I explain an overlapping generations model, working adults providing the labour needed for intergenerational transfer. Him- ok. so you don’t need families to take care of old people in the US then? Me-no but it doesn’t mean it weakens the family! Him- ok fine. But it doesn’t strengthen it, right? Me-No Him-what about capital markets? … Good natured argument continued. I got the job.

All too often, we economists get so bogged-down in some nerdy subset/specialty of our study that we accidentally lose our audience in the process (econ is a very broad field). We also have a tendency to be so overly guarded about our assumptions conversationally (as we would be in a paper) that we make econ seem entirely theoretical, rather than a highly applicable decision science. So! Do your homework — come prepared with highly relevant examples and thoughts, and stay on point!

While theory is good and provides and highlights your understanding, in my experience it is the very application of that theory that will help the person you’re communicating with understand that you have a firm grasp of the concept. Taking this further, relating the application back to everyday examples is key in illustrating mastery.

It is an intersectional subject and without being cognizant of other social sciences and the role these aspects play in Economics, you cannot ace an Economics related role. 2.
