How can you demonstrate your passion for information security?

If you're choosing a project to develop your skills or add to your portfoilo, consider something that would be useful in the role that you're applying for. If you want to be a pentester, a tool or script that automates the discovery of credentials in open shares. For appsec roles look at asynchronous pipelines so that you're not slowing down developers getting to prod. For web app pentesting consider writing a plugin for BURP Suite. If you're out of ideas though, there are also plenty of open source projects that need contributors, and a small amount of time a day goes a long way in the long run. At the very least, these give you something interesting to share at your interview.

True passion is a rare quality that can change the world. It's finding joy in what you do, even when it may seem mundane to others. In the realm of information security, passion means approaching every task with enthusiasm, seeing greatness in the seemingly routine, and consistently striving to excel. The passionate individuals in cybersecurity are the unsung heroes, turning the mundane into meaningful steps toward a safer digital world. Demonstrating passion involves acquiring skills to fortify information assets. People with Passion are the ones who turn the impossible into possible and are always ready to face new challenges.

The stigma that being too enthusiastic about something only validates our passion for it, takes us nowhere. To be passionate about information security the most important aspect is to gather knowledge, calmly and thoroughly. IT as whole is a machine build up of many parts, in almost every part there could be a prospect of security lapse. So we need to gather a thorough and in depth knowledge of different processes to be able to understand the security aspect of it. Everything else can wait. In India there is an old saying that 'Knowledge flows', so once we have correct knowledge it will flow and show up in our profile, in our work and in our success stories.

Usually when we say "portfolio" people automatically think it has to be actual work/projects. It doesn't. It can include voluntary work and hobbies (such as building your own kit/tinkering with environments at home, or helping family/friends with technology issues). You can also showcase your passion through attendance of related events and how you stay abreast with the latest news (i.e., do you listen to podcasts, read books/articles/blogs/website news, follow or interact with security professionals on social media? Etc.) Also, even if you haven't got a particular certification/qualification yet, if you're still working towards one...MENTION THAT! It shows you're committed to your own security/technology learning and development.

I was a part of the interview process, as my company was looking for someone for our team. There was a guy with incredible cybersecurity skills but needed more social and interpersonal skills. He was much better than anyone in the room, but he can't tell us a story about himself. You can be the master of cybersecurity, but if no one knows about it or nothing is confirmed (certs, for example), you have a problem. Start small and build the story.

Attending conferences is a great way to find other professionals you can connect and collaborate with. You can build lasting relationships at these events. A year later you may find yourself unsure of a solution to a problem but these connections may have ideas to help you.

In my experience having knowledge in information security isn’t all you need. An active security engineer needs to be aware of trends and incidents around. But that can only be done by networking, and being around fellow information security professionals. This allows you to have recent knowledge and a genuine understanding of what’s on ground in different sectors. It also give you a privilege to figure out new technologies for security management and be able to discuss and get others perspectives on new information and security frameworks that keep being developed in this ever changing emerging technological world.

One hundred percent joining and contributing to the communities can't be neglected. First thing first, all the leaders in not just information security but any domain have immensely contributed to the tech communities. Joining communities teach you how to become selfless while doing something that you actually like, it helps one understand that not always money should be the motivating factor. If you ACTUALLY love what you do, community contribution will be effortless to you and the satisfaction/recognition that contribution gives you is invaluable. Not always being the office guy helps you learning new things, meet people, listen to their views and grow as you go! :)

Networking is about helping each other. Especially in the area of information security you need "trusted peers" that you can ask for help. And others need to be able to trust you. All this takes time and is not accomplished by just turning to others when you need their input, it is much better to provide help/documents/info to the community first.

Demonstrating your passion for information security is like showcasing your expertise in a favorite hobby. Start by actively participating in cybersecurity forums and social media groups. Next create a blog or a vlog to discuss security topics. It allows you to articulate your thoughts, share experiences, and educate others, showcasing your depth of knowledge and commitment. Attend and present at conferences and/or webinars. It not only shows your expertise but also your willingness to be part of the community and contribute to its growth. Finally, continuous learning through courses and certifications is crucial. It's like a musician practicing daily, constantly honing their skills.

In my experience growing up I always thought that one profession where you constantly need to learn and be on your toes all the time was the medical profession where doctors always need to be in the know-how of everything that is constantly changing and which drug compound is used to cure what. Information Security has in the past decade or so fast become that type of a field. With all the threats emerging constantly it is important to keep up with the latest trends. Each person can keep up with the latest trends in multiple different ways be it through news articles, blog posts, podcasts, etc. I personally prefer some news articles and being in the Security compliance field the different security frameworks are a good place to start too.

Information security is never a "set it and forget it" subject. No matter what your role is within Information Security, following the trends is critically important. If you love to learn, you'll be challenged and excited working in this field. Find your favorite "go to" blogs, youtube channels, podcasts, and online communities. Participate actively and get to know people. New vulnerabilities and new threats are published all the time. If you're looking for a new position, be ready to talk about all the ways you learn to demonstrate your passion for the field, and show that your knowledge is current.

As it is said..."Another Day, Another Vulnerability". One should understand that Information Security itself is one heck of a really fast moving mammoth. You can't know it all, it won't stay at one place, there is no way you can become an expert unless you are willing to challenge yourself each day while expanding your knowledge about the current/latest trends in security. Keeping oneself updated with the trends will always save the day. Best suggestion for staying up to date is following #infosec and #cybersecurity across various platforms you are active on.

One of the effective ways in demonstrating your passion for information security is to champion a new security solution for your organization. This starts by identifying the best use cases that the information security solution will address. Identification of your skill gaps and sharpening your skills on the new security solution is an important step in the process. Sell your idea by engaging the stakeholders to showcase how innovation will bring value to the organization. Keep positive attitude in your willingness to accept feedback throughout the process. In my experience, I find that seeing the implementation of your innovative idea from inception to deployment is a key aspect of demonstrating passion for information security.

Having said that practice makes you perfect, one should never hesitate from learning new things and practice them as much as you can. Challenge yourself with tasks, for example try setting up an Active Directory and attack it. If you wish to learn more about something, try building it, for example writing a network scanner will teach you far more about networking than you ever can learn by reading blogs or articles/books. So goes for Malware Analysis, try creating one by yourself, you'll get to learn far more about various aspects of maldev (windows) and analysis like networking, windows API, processes, packers, crypters, obfuscation, sandboxing etc. that one might find overwhelming when read using textual material.

Practicing skills through diverse scenarios is indeed a cornerstone of cybersecurity proficiency. Platforms like Hack The Box or TryHackMe offer valuable, hands-on experience, simulating real-world challenges. Setting up a home lab or experimenting on personal devices can deepen understanding of practical vulnerabilities. Developing custom tools or scripts showcases not only technical skill but also innovation and problem-solving abilities. This active engagement in learning and applying knowledge is crucial in a field defined by rapid change and evolving threats. It shows a commitment to staying ahead in cybersecurity.

Engaging in continuous learning is crucial for demonstrating passion in information security. Stay updated on the latest trends, vulnerabilities, and tools by reading relevant books, research papers, and attending online courses. Practicing your skills through ethical hacking or participating in Capture The Flag (CTF) challenges also showcases your commitment to honing your abilities in a hands-on way. This practical experience will not only enhance your knowledge but also highlight your dedication to staying at the forefront of information security.

In my opinion, when discussing information security in interviews or presentations, go beyond talking, share a story. Dive into security projects, revealing your challenges, strategies, and lessons learned. Emphasise continuous improvement, showcasing your ongoing journey of growth, not just completing tasks. In organisational discussions, ask questions to express genuine interest in concerns and priorities. It's more than showcasing your knowledge; it's about curiosity and understanding. Expressing interest goes beyond words, make a narrative of experiences, growth, and understanding of current security needs. This approach goes beyond showcasing skills; it tells a relatable, human story resonating with your passion for Cyber security.

Expressing enthusiasm and insight during interactions is a key way to demonstrate your passion for information security. In interviews or meetings, sharing experiences from past projects or maybe incidents, with an emphasis on your actions, rationales, and learnings, can be very impactful. It's also valuable to engage by asking insightful questions about an organization's security goals, challenges, or policies. This not only shows your deep interest in the subject but also highlights your communication skills and your ability to understand and contribute to security discussions in a meaningful way. Your ability to articulate your passion and knowledge in these settings is as important as technical prowess in the field of cybersecurity.

Show your passion as the passionate human being you are! When it comes to identifying and prioritizing your goals, present practical case studies from the business and share your experiences, expressing how you feel about transparency. Demonstrate proficiency in your work. Remember, we are not only securing platforms; we are fostering cybersecurity awareness and making a positive impact in our everyday situations.

In my opinion, the best way to show your interest and showing your passion for any topic be it information security is be eager to listen and willing to raise your hand up when opportunities present and when given the opportunity to talk about information security in either an interview setting or in front of an audience, lead with examples and explain the how. I personally find it impactful when one is able to articulate their experience by showing their work along with the impact of that work. I use the SBI (Situation Behavior Impact) model a lot.

Pay it forward. Just as someone helped you get into the business, now it's your turn to help others through mentoring and other means of helping others understand the profession.

The premise of this article is harmful. In no other industry are candidates asked to prove their level of interest. It's a job. You're allowed to log off at the end of the day, go home, and live your life outside of work. To promote otherwise is detrimental to the collective mental health of the industry and sets unreasonable expectations. No mechanic would be overlooked if they don't have a car up on blocks in their garden. No nurse has ever been asked who they practice their sutures on at home. No account has to have a pet project spreadsheet to be deemed worthy of a job.
