Not that these skills can't be taught, but it gives them a head start, and also shows curiosity and inclination toward the new work they will be doing. And as far as the SQL'ers go, there's a place for them too. I often think of the required skillset as a slider between SQL and Python. So long as folks are willing to up-skill a little on that scale, and learn to code, there is plenty of SQL based model building and ELT code to be written.

Shortage on DE talent can hit you hard especially if you have a data driven process flow meaning that everything you do is dependent on data and data infrastructure which is what a DE provides. Fortunately, there are some roles that are favourable and not that much work to flip or add some DE components to. Your first look will be your back end engineers, especially the process back end engineers. They are already familiar with the infrastructure and architecture side of things and it takes a short intro/immersion into the data world to get a hang on things. If you're short on BE engineers, you can train your data analytics talent. This might take a bit more time and would work best if you prioritize the skills you need asap.

Sure, you can outsource many tasks to SaaS tools like data ingestion and use AI to automate some query creation but you always need to train the team so they understand how to do data engineering in the context of your business
