In Windows settings, go to updates then set your desired settings and when you want to update and your devices active hours. On macOS turn on Automatically Keep macOS up to date, in a Linux OS use the package manager for the distro you run.

In my opinion, this point is not relevant to the question in the title, “How can you customize your operating system to handle growth and expansion?” Updating the system is not a customization, it is a real need. The upgrade, yes, maybe treated like a customization, but more of the infrastructure, not the system itself because in the upgrade process, there is no information that we add something of ours.

The crucial thing here is closed in these words: “Depending on your OS and skill level, you can use various tools and languages to modify or create your own themes, icons, wallpapers, sounds, cursors, fonts, and more.” When I was teaching students focused on programming, they rarely saw the need to know the operating systems: “I will be a developer, so I don't need to know how the operating systems work. I need Java, Python …” The truth lies here: the better you know the system, the more customizable your product will be, and the system itself.
