Before planning a dashboard design, you must put yourself in the shoes of the user. Which parts of the screen get most exposure, what are the most frequent and easy to click zones. Depending upon these, most important widgets shall be placed in these locations, generally above-the-fold. Less frequently used widgets shall be kept on the remaining places. Widgets shall also be categorized based on their update frequency. For example, "sales" widget gets updated more frequently. Language based personalization is also very important. For users with right-to-left orientation of languages, a UX designer must consider appropriate RTL layout for the same.

As a Product Designer, personalized dashboards empower users to tailor their data experience. Understanding user needs is key generative research and creating user profiles help identify customization parameters. Prioritize simplicity, offer an intuitive interface, and consider real-time previews for immediate design feedback. Apart from the visual hierarchy and above-the-fold widgets, design consistency can be achieved by using a UI framework like the "Material Design". Such frameworks have consistent design guidelines and rules for each and every UI element.

Widgets shall be draggable with a close and minimize button. A toolbar shall be available with icons of all archived widgets so that they can be restored as required. A "Reset all widgets and settings" button is a must. Text size, color and accessibility options shall also be given a priority.

I’ve designed over 7 enterprise dashboards for tech SaaS in the past, and here are some of my biggest takeaways 1. Do not assume users want to personalise a dashboard from scratch. Sometimes it is the complete opposite. Always include dashboard templates, but allow for flexibility for user customization 2. Modular dashboard components are useful in this case, where users can define dashboards based on their use cases 3. Dashboards should be intuitive and simple. If a dashboard has too many features and clicks, it causes information overwhelm. Think of how to personalise in terms of what data or metrics to show based on user profile (and what matters more for different users)
