Agreed on this point! However, I think there's a balance to be found in alt text. Alt text is, first and foremost, an accessibility tool for folks with vision impairments--it's meant to be a description of what's in the image. When creating alt text, we should be sure that our SEO efforts don't make the alt text useless to people who are browsing with screen readers!

When you have identified your target keywords, ensure that they are included in what I like to call the “SEO Sweet Spots”. Namely, these areas include the URL, title/subject header, in the names of your images, description of your meta, within the body of content/text itself, and ALT tags. Always! ...but I have to say more than that. The first words are the most important words. Meaning, the words that you want to rank for should be used first in your naming convention and alt text. I typically research my keywords before I name my images...or I have a list of keywords that my client wants to rank for and I use those when naming my files and describing my images in alt text. I have to say that AI has been a game changer for this process. It streamlines the process.

I am a huge proponent of ALT text. It can also be a benefit to be another way to add your SEO keywords in, if used wisely. Be specific and relevant.

Make your pictures smaller. This will make them load faster on the internet. You can use a tool like TinyPNG or TinyJPG to make your pictures smaller without making them look worse. Or you can try JPEG Mini which is paid.

In my experience, I try and keep my images around 100k or lower for the Do Tell A Belle blog. I sometimes go a little higher depending on the importance of the graphic, how many images are on the page and where the image falls on the page. I strongly agree with JPEG for photos, PNG for logos and icons, GIF for animations, and SVG for vectors. There have been requests from colleagues to convert photos to png for social media. It just goes against what I was taught and I find that the image quality isn't quite right to my trained eye.

I always resize my images smaller when I use them in an article on my company's blog, especially if I'm tweaking said article for SEO. Not everyone has a superfast Internet connection with a lot of bandwidth.

Full disclosure...while I am familiar with this concept, I don't have experience using it. In my research, it seems to me like this is a specialty all on its own. There is a process of Implementing Structured Data, Creating the Image Sitemaps, Optimizing File Names and Alt Text (that I know), and Monitoring The Performance and Refine. This is clearly something that should be top priority to compete and rank well in SEO.

It's integrated into WordPress and the plugin will guide you along the steps you need to do this. Plus, Yoast has some great courses on their site if you aren't familiar with these concepts, but you will need to have upgraded to their premium plugin.
