How can you create a sense of purpose for your consulting team when driving innovation?

Consultants are a different breed altogether. They love innovation - new processes, new technologies, new frameworks and so forth. So it isn't too difficult to create a sense of purpose for one's consulting team when driving innovation. Here's what I have adopted: 1. What needs to be done is often clear to the consulting teams. Framework of how it should to be done is something that consultants requires direction from the leaders. 2. Understandably innovation is a political process (requires consensus building within the teams and organization). Consultants often require help in navigating the organizational politics to be able to bring the best solution. This, in my experience helps foster culture of innovation.

As an aspiring entrepreneur, I understand the power of a burning purpose. To Borrow a line from Stephen covey: start from the end in mine and work back wards. Simon sinek once said : ask Why before you what and how innovation. There are several frameworks for innovative solutioning but what the rationale of innovation and change? Has that been clearly elucidated and attracted a buy in ? Are we improving existing are we building from scratch ? These needs to be transparent before executing innovation in anything

align the team to a common purpose and help them visualize a bigger picture larger than their domain expertise and deliverables, only then you will be able to build a good team that works for you rather than individuals working in silos just to ensure the excel sheets are populated and project plans are green.

Great question! In my opinion, it's not innovation itself that works, but the sense of innovation and the impact it can have. For example: "We need to implement an innovative Salesforce module" is an innovative statement, but it's an end in itself. On the other hand, if I say: "We will reduce the time to launch digital campaigns through Salesforce by 50%", that's a different statement. I am sure that by communicating innovation in this way, the team will always be engaged and motivated.

During these phases, show support like a leader and mentor and handhold them through virgin territories. You can also let them take controlled risks as long you you back them. These could be simpler day to say situations like leading a client meeting in your presence or steering a negotiation while you are around to address anything that may go out of hand. This will keep them engaged and motivated. Tell them to be open to feedback and adjust your approach based on what works and what doesn't.

Encourage the team to see innovation not just as delivering client outcomes but as a path for professional development and mastery of new skills. Here is the true reality as opposed to consulting for the next contract. The issue today is more pinpoint or issues based. Strategy has taken a backseat to cultural and woke issues. I would say organizations have lost their way and should focus on return for investors and participating employees. A company still exists to improve and enhance investor return on investment. Hire the best people for the role and should always be the right direction.
