I solve this with one statement at the beginning of the relationship: "No one will know that I am your coach or mentor unless you tell them." Then I use a three-hat method throughout the relationship: - Coach hat: "What else have you tried?" - Mentor hat: "Here's a story/perspective to consider..." - YOU are the coach/mentor hat: "You already know what to do, if you were coaching or mentoring you, what would you tell yourself to do?" PS: The moment they brag about me as their coach or mentor, the relationship is more about their ego than doing the work. That's when most of the challenges start to happen.

Also, when things go wrong, go back to the starting point.

I have found that the best way to build trust and rapport is to be yourself. Seems simple though we can sometimes become a mirror of the client, not even a mirror, but a loose replica. Being honest and transparent and even vulnerable, at times, allows the client to see your humanity, not your checkboxes. Being vulnerable enough to share part of your story to create connection but not so much that your story becomes the topic of the session. Also, being reliable, maintaining your integrity, demonstrating competence and being true to your word also builds trust and allow the client to feel that you are truly providing a safe space.

Building trust is critical to all successful relationships in our lives. Establishing trust with a coachee is essential to effectively guiding them on their journey of self improvement. As a Predictive Index certified practitioner, I start every new relationship asking my coachee to complete the pI behavior assessment. I then review the results with them in detail to confirm accuracy and also to share my results and our differences. This enables us to have objective discussions about where we are similar and where we are different. I then also create a relationship guide that provides more insight. Having this objective view as a foundation and then being always present and authentic helps to establish an awesome foundation to build upon.

Asking permission to challenge is important. But what is more important is to tell the coachee that they have the freedom to say No - not now or today is not a good day. :-)

In modern society, mentoring has taken a different approach - basically- though not visibly and easily noticeable. This therefore, require adjusted approach to coaching or mentoring someone, for instance the cognizance that you are basically entering someone else's private space by way of assisting them achieve their dreams and growth. Therefore, it is crucial to always let them feel they are in control as you help them achieve what's in them. Because their problem or desire is "How to get there?" not Where to go.

Coach-Mentee is a unique relationship where it allows to use the power of both coaching & mentoring techniques.
