As with any research goals are the first step and define the method you will plan for. Tasks don’t differ much to in person tests but what differs is how the facilitation happens, the non verbal information you can collect in one case or the other.

While moderated is the best option it costs more, takes longer to set up and can yield fewer participants. I recommend having regular remote unmoderated sessions and then selecting what you would like to go deeper on and creating a moderated test plan around those areas.

Because in many occasions you may have little time to incorporate a usability test in a fast-moving product development process. In those cases, it might make the difference between an existing user test or no test.

Piloting your test is an absolute must, whether it's a moderated or unmoderated usability test. For qualitative moderated testing, we ask a co-worker to pose as a participant while the moderator runs through the session guide and the note-taker keeps time. We very quickly get a sense of flow, participant understanding, timing, and whether the tasks and tech work. Amendments are then made, and the first participant session runs smoothly. The same goes for unmoderated usability testing - ask at least three co-workers to go through the test and give their feedback. They often pick up bugs, typos, and report misunderstandings.

A clear testing script is worth it's weight in gold if you want consistency. Develop it so that anyone can use it, and the outcome of each test action is clearly defined. Ensure a variety of testers get involved. Ensure you have a clear route for testers to feedback quickly. It's often helpful and more efficient to get feedback in real time rather than waiting for each tester to finish their script.

Be prepared for tech failures, always have back up options. Be available but allow testers to test without external influences or distractions.

When testing is done remotely there should be backup plans in case a tech issue comes up; for example setting up alternative testing times if needed or moving over to having the user record the test if there are bandwidth issues and the test can't be done in realtime. This is something that happened frequently at the start of the pandemic when people were moving over to remote methods.

This is the most important part of the work. If you do not show it, is almost as if you have never done it. I struggled a lot with this when I started as a Researcher. Know how each stakeholder likes to see results. Adapt your report to fit what the team and audience prefers. Make sure to engage them with the material. Share the results, share main points on slack channel, share clips of the tests, share anything! If you see space, invite the designers and PMs to an analysis workshop. This will allow you to create a sense of “ownership” of the research for the whole team. If they get to be involved they tend to trust more on the results, and value it more as well.

It is of most critical importance that you understand the difference of reporting results and reporting an analysis of results. Put effort in writing your analysis in bitesize and understandable highlights that any stakeholder will be able to digest. I, usually write up the usability test results highlights in the beginning of the report deck to ensure if my stakeholders don't have the time to read through it all (a very high chance that would be the case), they would have at least gotten the most important analysis at the very start.

While you'll likely need to present your research findings to the company in a form of a presentation, I highly recommend involving your stakeholders right from the beginning. This includes: ? setting goals and expectations together, ? collecting their assumptions and hypotheses to guide the research, ? consistently sharing insights after each session (not just at the end). There are 2 great things about this approach. First, it brings in a fresh perspective from your stakeholders, allowing them to share any differing viewpoints. Second, it fosters a sense of involvement, making them less likely to be overly critical towards your findings.

Tie up your usability test results with the relevant business and strategic goals of the users or the business. Your work is meant to contribute to the bigger picture and if it doesn't then you should ask yourself is your solution solving the right problems for users and business.

Follow up on actionable insights. Work closely with Product Manager(s) to incorporate findings into roadmaps and backlogs for prioritizations. This closes the full circle of successfully executed research.

In addition to a solid report format, the socialisation of the findings is essential or you risk your report gathering dust in a Drive folder somewhere. I like to invite not just the Product team but also the wider team to the initial read-out, while offering a space to answer questions and facilitate discussions for each insight. At a later stage, I find it helpful to offer a more focused meeting with the Design team to truly get into the nitty gritty of the research in a more casual session, as well as prioritisation workshops with Product if needed. Further, ensure that the report is stored in a findable location with clear labelling and a short summary to help others find what they're looking for.
