2 Define their desired outcomes

Once you have a clear picture of your employees' current situation, you can help them define their desired outcomes. What are their short-term and long-term career goals? What are their specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives? What are their criteria for success and happiness at work? You can use techniques such as vision boards, mind maps, goal-setting worksheets, or SMART goal templates to help your employees articulate their desired outcomes.

3 Identify the gaps and opportunities

After you have defined your employees' desired outcomes, you can help them identify the gaps and opportunities between their current situation and their career goals. What are the skills, knowledge, experience, or qualifications they need to acquire or improve? What are the resources, support, or opportunities they need to access or create? What are the barriers, challenges, or risks they need to overcome or mitigate? Once you have identified the gaps and opportunities, you can help your employees develop the action steps to bridge them. 5 Provide the support and feedback

As a career development coach, your role is not only to help your employees create their action plan, but also to provide them with the support and feedback they need to execute it. How will you coach, mentor, or advise your employees along the way? How will you motivate, encourage, or inspire them to stay on track? How will you provide constructive, timely, and relevant feedback to help them improve? 6 Review and adjust the action plan
