How can you create a positive environment for relationship building?

Creating a positive environment is essential because people don't leave bad managers/partners they leave bad environments Bad environment=people see the "old you " Positive environment= people see the "new you" Solution: change their negative perception into positive by: 1- Erasing the bad perception - spark curiosity to reconsider their decisions 2- Replacing it with a new one - ignite their confidence so they see things in the new light 3- Build partnership - re-connection and re-commitment People will stay if they believe in the process and commit to the routine The same applies to a struggling marriage

Authenticity is KEY! We are sometimes hesitant to share our authenticity because it is a very vulnerable act. However, demonstrating how to be authentic and vulnerable encourages others to do the same. It is much easier to 'go' when someone else has 'gone first.' Be that leader.

Optimism goes a long way to building great relationships. Positivity is inspiring and contagious. From my own experience, I tend to avoid people who are negative and grumpy. This gets to the question: What does it mean to be authentic? If you are authentically grumpy, do NOT act that way. You may have to fake positivity to be a better team member. Authenticity is most important when your authentic self is pro-social.

Authenticity is the nail on the head. People can read right through any act someone is trying to put on for them. The people you work with (or are interviewing to work with) are real humans with real lives. We can all relate to bad traffic or a poor night's sleep but the spin you add to that is what's important - and it will leave your customers or colleagues with a fresh perspective. Bad traffic? What song got you through it? Awful sleep? How early are you hitting the hay tonight? We're all in this together - just be you! You're PERFECT as you are!

We unfortunately live in a time where we feel our smart devices are a new body part. They follow us everywhere we go- into every room, every event, every situation. Because of this, it then feels unusual to be present with a human and resisting the urge to check our devices for an extended period of time. There was a reason our teachers asked us to given them our undivided attention. Our attention span is a reflection of our interest in a person or group and should be regarded as a level of respect/disrespect. Seeking to understand instead of listening to respond is key. Being able to listen with an unbiased understanding is equally important and that is how trust is developed.

Turn off your smartphone. Close your laptop. Remove those earplugs. Maintain eye contact - yes even virtually. And then listen without judgment or interruption. Mentally making note of clarifying questions to be asked at the end.

I love Ashwin's advice and couldn't agree more. Listen with interest to another person. Gauge their emotions. Ask questions. Share what you noticed you have in common. Ask if they can teach you something that they're great at (even if it's Solitaire on a lunch break.) Human-first is the way to build a safe and open environment for relationship-building.

Active and empathetic listening also means that you leave your agenda out of it. There is a time to listen and a time to offer advice. Relationship building requires that you have a genuine interest in the other person which begins with active and empathetic listening. Your turn to share will come.

Communicating begins with clear boundaries. Once boundaries are firmly set, those who accept them and respect them can move forward appropriately, expressing their ideas, opinions, and expectations. Remember to know your audience, use concise language and active listening.

Communicating is a key element in building strong lasting and trusting relationships with your employees. Make sure that you provide a net of safety that they feel comfortable communicating and don't interrupt. To ensure that understand, ask clarifying questions. Ask them if they want your assistance or just want someone to listen to. Be kind, show empathy, and most importantly, don't judge.

It first starts with embracing ones biases. Conscious and Unconscious. And it takes time to recognize these. Once we know what these are, only then can we start meaningfully reaching out and trying to understand diverse viewpoints, experiences and try our best to see where they are coming from.

Just because something is different, does not mean that it is wrong. We mistakenly believe that everyone thinks the same way we do. They don't. Everyone has their own perspective, experience, and world view. There is much to learn from others when you value the uniqueness and contributions of their viewpoint.

Don't confuse feedback with criticism. Criticism is based in fear and it is designed to tear the other person down. Feedback offers another perspective for the receiver to accept or reject. Listen to feedback, take what applies, and disregard the rest.

Several years ago I hired this young woman and she had the desire and drive to excel in her role...We would have our 1X1 discussions and really dug into them. One day I had to give her some feedback to improve and I did it kindly and with candor. I expected some pushback or the "but", instead she said "Thank you, Feedback is a gift!" That phrase has never left me and I use it in all situations when I'm providing feedback. It's helped me to share to those employees that if I didn't provide them with feedback then they wouldn't be able to grow, get promoted or achieve their goals. It's helped me so much in my conversations with my employees and also in my personal life.

When you give feedback and suggestions, that is valuable and actionable, people will view you as a trusted advisor. They’ll seek continue to seek more from you (again it has to be valuable and actionable) and from there your relationship will only continue to grow. Be a trusted advisor.
