It helps to analyze and write down next to each reference what you actually like about it - is it the subject matter? Is it the color palette? Is it the level of detail? When you understand what makes the image good for your purposes, you can more selectively address this specific element and apply it to your own work. You can also create your own references! For example, when creating character designs I find myself in front of a mirror - often in weird poses - trying to catch the essence of what I imagine. I also use 3D software to create basic references to help me with perspective.
