Remember, leadership first. Location second. When we first begin leading virtual/remote teams, our initial concern is on the fact that people are not in front of us physically. We stress about our people feeling “connected” because they aren’t co-located. All of this becomes overwhelming for us as “leaders,” but in reality pushes us to be more managers than leaders. Regardless of where or how our teams are structured, leadership is still leadership. We still need to connect with, understand and listen to our people face-to-face, we just use Teams or Zoom as the medium. Our people still need space to express frustrations and hear feedback, we just use Google Meet or Slack. The principles of leadership should always come first.
