How can you create library programs that meet diverse needs?

Developing library programs that cater to diverse needs starts with assessing your community. Understand who uses your library – students, parents, seniors, professionals? Discover their interests, preferences, and demands. This insight guides program selection. If there's demand for tech-related activities, offer coding workshops. If reading is popular, initiate book clubs. By recognizing your community's diversity, you create programs that resonate, fostering engagement and enriching the library experience for everyone.

Learn the diversity of your library users' information needs and you may create prototypes to cater for their needs. Library users' are unique with various skills and information needs.

Knowledge of the community you serve is so important. You need to have resources to help with unemployment, social services for people who have various situations like homelessness.

Needs assessments are great, BUT to meet diversity needs in programming do not expect to find all the diversity needs represented in community groups or through feedback and surveys. Go outside the community bubble to feature diverse voices and resources that may not be reflected in a library community. Marginalized groups and voices featured in library programming can be controversial in some communities, so be sure to have strong policies in place to protect diverse views and presenters.

The main function of the library is to serve the community it is located in and to serve that community properly, the library has to "know" its users. Knowing the users will be able to give the library ideas on what sort of information resources are needed by that community. This will result in serving diverse people at a time.

Library frameworks can be a little old fashioned and not aligned to today's needs. I think the recommendation piece with personalized student experience would be the key.

One thing I’ve found helpful in guiding my program development is that not every program has to be for every person. It is more inclusive to have tailored programs that really work to the core of an aim to assist the various cohorts in our community than attempting to create programs that have something for everyone all in one. Focussing on specific areas and specific cohorts allows you to provide programs that better suit each of those cohorts.

Inclusivity is really a simple message. I agree completely with Cesarina! Do not try to "have something for everyone" at one event. Instead, have an event for everyone.

The summer is an excellent time to pilot new library programs. The youth are out of school and have the time and flexibility to head to the library and try new things. If advertised properly, library programs can gain a significant amount of traction. Offering perks, such as snacks and thoughtful items, to those willing to come and explore the new programs is a great way to draw in a crowd. Launching new library programs in the summer may also appeal to college and university students, as many students take a lighter course load in the summer, giving themselves more time to explore new and helpful avenues.

Awareness of the community including challenges, opportunities and socioeconomic factors will guide the search for partners and resources that will enable a collaborative environment for all events to be successful.

Library programs should cater to the needs of the immediate user community. It can also use the salient features of the community to educate others. For example, if your library is situated close to a fishing community, you can organize programs that empower them, such as strengthening collections, guest speeches etc. At the same time, you may invite the community to establish a specialized exhibition on the fisheries industry, fishing gear etc, to educate children and adults from other communities too. This builds the partnership between the library and all communities who can access the library and its resources.
