How can you create an inspiring TED talk?

I recently stepped forward to help University of California Berkeley faculty member @Alex Budak shape his TEDX talk. I advised him to share personal stories - to give the talk only he could share. My regret from my 2015 TEDX talk Queenstown New Zealand - I wished I'd spoken for 10 or 12 minutes instead of 18.

Identify specifically why your idea, topic or whatever it is that you are speaking on is revolutionary and a game changer. Ensure there is no hype or motivation to the talk. Stick specifically and only how amazing your purpose is and describe the value-add of your idea in 1 to 3 sentences.

The best way to craft your story in an effective manner is to listen to other stories that engage you. Watch several TED talks. Which stories grabbed you? And which didn't? Ask yourself why in both instances. Then, go back to your story and apply those aspects that were particularly compelling to the story you would like to tell.

Stories that are engaging, emotional, and memorable evoke emotions. This in turn fosters a deeper connection with the audience and making the message resonate. Engaging narratives hold attention, preventing boredom. Memorable stories enhance retention, ensuring the talk's impact endures. By crafting compelling stories, speakers create an immersive experience that captivates, educates, and inspires the audience, making the talk more impactful and resonant. Bear in mind to never mention your book, brand, or anything self-promotional when submitting or doing a TEDx talk, that's a huge no-no.

To make a TED or TEDx talk clear and easily understandable: Simplicity: Use everyday language for easy comprehension. Avoid Complexity: Remove jargon to prevent confusion. Clarity in Short Sentences: Keep points concise and clear. Visual Aids: Use visuals to aid understanding. Analogies: Employ relatable comparisons for complex ideas. Storytelling: Share relatable stories to illustrate points. Audience-Centric: Address audience interests and concerns. Cultural Sensitivity: Be mindful of diverse cultural backgrounds. Practice & Feedback: Test clarity with a varied test audience. Continuous Refinement: Edit for ongoing simplicity. Prioritizing clear, relatable language ensures your talk speaks to a broad audience effectively.

One thing I always teach speakers is- keep things at 6th grade level! The more complex the topic, the harder it will be. But, that’s what the speaker coaches are for.

To prepare effectively for a TED or TEDx talk within the 18-minute limit: Script Mastery: Craft a focused script with key points. Time Awareness: Time yourself to adjust pacing. Practice Iteration: Rehearse multiple times for refinement. Peer Input: Gather feedback from peers for enhancement. Visual Support: Use visuals to amplify your message. Self-Evaluate: Record and review your practice sessions. Edit Concisely: Trim unnecessary elements for clarity. Strategic Pauses: Employ pauses for emphasis and control. Seamless Flow: Ensure smooth transitions between ideas. Realistic Rehearsal: Simulate the actual presentation setting.
