I've used both Figma and Adobe XD, and I can tell you with confidence that Figma is far superior to XD. The latest updates in Figma (Variables in particular) make it an amazing tool to create and edit mockups & prototypes with ease. Of course, this does depend on the size of your project, but it seems that Figma will outlast XD in the future due to its strong support by the community.

There are many prototyping tools. But choosing the right one that aligns with your team and product is the key. But I think Figma is the best tool for advance prototyping. It allows many advance interaction & motion effects as well which gives us a realistic view of the product as a designer or decision-maker. But for small projects & based on the requirements of your team, you can use other tools like Miro, Framer, Origami Studio (for mobile UI) For beginners, Justmind can be a good choice as well. If you are confused then you can start with Figma. I believe figma will meet your requirements.

Defining goals before prototyping will help to stay on focus. Because we can add many detail to the prototype but how much detail we will add it depends on the budget, deadline & more importantly how much is perfect for user testing. Some products need advanced prototype that includes real time features & others is just like swaping screens or scrolling mouse. So, it is important to define the goal!

A designer gets more creative freedom on paper than a computer screen. So, it will be very helpful and time-saving if we sketch before jumping to the designing tool. We can sketch our ideas and play with them. It naturally gives us more freedom. Once, we get some ideas to start work on figma/XD then will save a lot of time & energy. Sketching need not be super perfect, we can sketch free hand.

Using components & UI kits will save a huge time and energy. You don't need design every single section or screen or element. You can use them from UI kit. UI kit is a collection of UI elements, design systems & sometimes graphics elements. It will help you to design faster, you can spend that extra time on UX. It is very essential for a successful prototype. Because when the product (Let's say an App) goes through the user interview phase with the prototype, then it must need to be realistic. If not then users can't focus to the interview, it will seem robotic to them. The whole user interview phase will break up. Adding interactive animation, scrolling effects makes the product realistic & succssful for the user interview.
