Be prepared to negotiate. Many contracts have terms that are only beneficial to the brand. I look for these in each contract: Indemnification It had to be mutual. Usage It's not free, unlimited, and automatic. It needs to be compensated and limited in scope and term. Exclusivity It has to be spelled out and if longer than a few weeks, compensated.

It’s important to provide the creator with a high-level overview of what’s included in the contract. Especially if the contract is multiple pages, try to be as transparent as possible in your communications so the creator has a clear understanding of the terms prior to reading.

Establishing long-lasting and successful relationships with influencers requires mutual trust. Over-communicating essential details for successful ad integrations is better than leaving details until the last second. Keep in mind that content creators often receive 5 to 10 ad integrations each month (some more, some less), and you're not the only brand the influencer works with during that time. It's also important to acknowledge that the channel owner knows their audience better than any brand ever could. During campaign discussions, it's beneficial to inquire how influencers anticipate their audience's response to specific formats, ad lengths, and ideally, the theme of the video the integration is running on to ensure it fits your ad.

The final step is to sign the contract and make it official. You should also keep a copy of the contract for your records, and send a copy to the influencer. You should also follow up with the influencer regularly and monitor the progress and performance of the campaign. A few of the many things I have learned from running influencer marketing for the past 13+ years: 1) Ensure that the influencer aligns with your brand and product, rather than just focusing on numbers. Does their audience match your product well? Would they be genuinely interested in using it? 2) As influencer marketing continues to grow, so do the number of monthly ad integrations on various channels. Consider exploring collaborations with smaller content creators. A smaller yet engaged niche audience might be a better fit for your product. 3) Make sure you have great systems in place before launching a campaign. Trackable links, analytics dashboards, a dedicated landing page, and possibly exclusive offer to entice that audience.
