How can you create engaging assessments using immersive technologies?

The idea of using immersive technologies in education excites me. All students should have the opportunity to use virtual or augmented reality in schools. Science fiction movies show us a lot of things that could be developed in the future and the students of today will have a chance to contribute to it. Exciting times ahead!

Share small topics, have brainstorming with GPT, create debates with AI tools and challenge conventional answers. Feed contradictory views to AI and debate about its outcomes.

This is a lot of fun and adds interest in “hands-on” studio Art classes whether they be drawing for the more engaged student , teacher’s certification or Children’s classes. Looking at different styles of art focusing on the same subjects and having the students discuss their own ideas and work in comparison.. doing photography and uploading for viewing and creating new works, etc. The ideas are endless!

Immersive technologies aim to create digital experiences that are more interactive, engaging, and realistic, with a greater degree of sensory immersion and spatial interaction compared to other online experiences. In order to create engaging contents leveraging immersive tech, It is required to carefully plan and align the learning objectives with the expected outcomes.

You can create engaging assessments through gathering and examining data. It involves assembling information on how students interacted with one another and performed in the immersive tests. Examine this information to obtain understanding of the areas of strength, weakness, and development for the learners. This information can then be used to guide intervention plans and instructional design. One can also improve and Iterate, this means to refine the immersive exams over time, taking into account input from learners and evaluation outcomes. Incorporate innovative instructional techniques, content, and technologies to improve the assessments' long-term efficacy and engagement.

The ultimate goal should be to empower students to become creators of their own immersive experiences. When students construct VR simulations, design AR overlays, or build immersive projects, they deepen their understanding through the act of creation. This also promotes the development of valuable technical and design skills, fostering a sense of agency alongside enhanced knowledge retention.

Integrating immersive technologies like VR, AR, and MR into assessments revolutionizes how we measure learning outcomes. Inspired by escape rooms, I designed a unique assessment experience where students tackled 2x2 systems of linear equations to "escape" a virtual world. This engaging format not only tested their mathematical knowledge but also fostered collaboration and critical thinking skills, making learning truly immersive.

Designing requires proper planning, time management with learning objectives. With the help of immersive learners with proper context, guidance, proper stories, it would be possible to design the assessment.

It's crucial to ensure that technology proficiency and reliability don't skew the assessment outcomes, maintaining the integrity of measuring student learning effectively.

There are so many challenges about the use of immersive technologies, such as: cost, internet connection, knowledge... But, for me the biggest challenge is to provide courses and resources for teachers to acquire the skills to implement these emerging technologies in their daily tasks to engage the students and to keep in touch with the cutting-edge devices.

One challenge is the accessibility and cost of technology. Not all institutions may have the resources to implement VR or AR assessments. Additionally, designing effective immersive assessments requires technical expertise and careful consideration of educational goals.

Evaluating immersive assessments involves assessing various aspects of the assessment process, including content, technology, user experience, and learning outcomes. Educators and instructional designers can gather valuable insights, identify areas for improvement, and make evidence-based decisions to enhance the effectiveness and impact of immersive assessment practices.

Using a rubric with well determined criteria and various levels of proficiency is the best method to evaluate student performance for immersive technologies.

Evaluation- an area to remain vigilant is ongoing updates and scenario review for immersive environments. These environments are undoubtedly expensive, but must be constantly updated and with real-world scenarios that users will face. Two areas I have experience requiring a constant assessment of immersive tech is law enforcement simulators and flight simulators. There are others, but these areas require a constant revision of sim programming itself- these program areas should require annual assessments for environmental weaknesses, and draw on feedback by capturing the voice of the customer which will benefit in sustaining a top notch program. Como director de educación aumentada por más de 10 a?os, uno de los desafíos más importantes siempre fue el tema de la calidad de las evaluaciones en entornos inmersivos. Evaluar las evaluaciones es un tema crítico y desafiante. En mi experiencia una buena práctica fue el feedback en tiempo real por parte de los estudiantes al final de cada evaluación, donde se les pedía que valoraran la calidad de las preguntas con un pulgar hacia arriba ?? o pulgar abajo?? y un espacio opcional para dar su opinión si lo deseaban, esta buena práctica nos permitía ir mejorando las calidad de evaluaciones en contraste con los resultados obtenidos por los estudiantes.
