There are many great options that are pretty easy even for beginners. For example: Freecad, Onshape, or Fustion 360. The latter one can also send the file directly to a slicer software such as Cura

You need to choose a software that you can get the best result. If you are an exterior designer, you can use softwares like Rhinoceros. You should be more careful in designing surfaces as you can have modeling failures more often. You can use parametric modeling softwares for mechanical parts. The most efficient way to switch between softwares to get the most benefit. Every software has its own advantage, so it would be wise to use them efficiently.

Some post processors like Cura and PreForm check the model and fix the model for you, you should verify that the repair has not generated unwanted features or deleted critical features. Dimensions and units are important. Check that the STL file is imported in the intended units (mm vs inches)

Exporting models as STL tends to be the Standard. When exporting you may define the units and resolution of the mesh. This may make it easier for some of the slicers to recognize the units of the model when importing.

Iteration is key! Because it is so quick and easy to print and test your model, it is easy to iterate for trial and error. 5, 10 and even 20 print iterations can sometimes be quicker, easier and cheaper than hours and hours of design studies and refinement.
