As a software developer, anything that is being repeated with more that 75% things being same in every iteration, it should be automated. Same is true for deployment. Each deployment has to have certain steps, most important of which is test cases and installing new libraries. With CI/CD in place, it can be automated a 100%, saving hours of time in deploying things manually, each time a new set of commits is ready to go to the users.

Two essential aspects of DevOps or full CI/CD are 1) Observability of code in production and 2) Automatic detection and remediation. Observability lets you automatically detect when the system acts abnormally (such as error rate increasing, or CPU spikes etc) . This can save valuable time between issue start and remediation. Where as Automatic detection and remediation should work in sync with your deployment pipeline. If, after deployment, the observability tools report issues, the deployment pipelines should automatically roll back the change. Automatic roll back can significantly reduce business impact and escalations.

The most challenging part of building a strong CI/CD pipeline is automated testing. Often, teams lack the necessary tooling to do integration and end-to-end testing in an automated way. This limitation prevents teams from fully trusting their pipelines and knowing that code is fully tested before reaching production. Often, they compensate for this gap via manual spot testing or regression testing, which slows down the deployment and adds extra cost. The best way to solve this challenge is to keep testing at the forefront of development. Teams should have a high bar of testing from day 1, and tools should be used to prevent deployment if code coverage drops.
