It is very important to know your router's ip address and your default gateway. I use the command prompt and i type ipconfig to find this. You can then use the IP address of the router to enter it into your browser url to access the router's interface to start the configuration you wish to perform.

2 Log in to your router's web interface

Once you log into your router's web interface using either the default router credentials if new or if this router was configured before the existing credentials you can then begin the configuration. If this is a new router and you cannot find the username and password in any of the documentation or on the router itself you may be able to google the make and model number. Once logged in the features and options you have available will vary from manufacturer and model of the router. Once logged in get to know the interface before you start changing anything.

3 Change your network name and password

I highly encourage changing the default username and password once you log into your Router and be sure to store them somewhere safe for use the next time you need to configure a setting. For routers where you will enable your wifi you can consider the fact that the SSID will appear to anyone who can see your wireless netwok and you do not want to name it something that will tell them who it belongs to. Your security mode such as WPA2 should also be enabled to protect your network. After you configure your changes and log off i would suggest a restart to be sure the settings take.
