1 Choose a secure platform

When allowing mobile devices for health professionals and you are managing them with MDM solution then you need to make sure even the MDM solution you are using is HIPAA compliant and necessary measurements are taken at the solution provider's end as well.

Other factors to consider are how long you will allow the device display to remain active or the timeframe before the device will lock. Users, should log out or lock the device as soon as they are done using it, but humans make mistakes and the longer the device goes before it locks after active the more opportunities there will be for violations. Also consider functionality that will wipe critical data if the device leaves the network it is configured to operate on.
