I agree with this approach because Industry today is very tech driven and fast evolving. Auditors should give an opportunity to update/improve things before proceeding with any punitive action.

Sharing your findings should be after the inspections and audits are completed. Those inspections and audits should not be announced ahead of time either. This allows the inspector/auditor to get a real understanding of what areas need improvement. Then, you include your team and turn the situation to a learning and development opportunity for the future.

As a member of a safety team, I encouraged employees to be the ones to bring up safety issues in their areas. These concerns were then brought forward to be mitigated by management. Audits were then conducted and new audit findings were brought forward for mitigation. These fixes were shared with the employees. Bringing up issues with safety concerns fixed is a great way to show employees that management takes employees safety concerns seriously.

The key thing with auditing is the mindset and intent of the auditor before they go into audit. The purpose of an audit is to check compliance/conformance, nothing more nothing less. The auditor should not have a mindset of looking for things that are wrong or hoping to make findings (these will reveal themselves through the process). The focus should just be on whether they meet a requirement or not. Furthermore, an auditor should highlight to the auditee they are there to help them improve their organisation, akin to being a ‘partner’ rather than an outsider. I liken auditing to being a Dr doing a health check to see how the organisations ‘health’ is.
