One thing I found useful was to ensure that the logic behind the selection of the variables used to build the model was clear. Second, using as many variables as necessary to reach the desired level of confidence, but not one more. Third important part was the ability to call out the limitations of the model.

Quantitative analysis is perhaps much more insightful given that it has the potential to reduce a perspective to a number and when compared the subjective biases cease to exist. At the same time, given its power to drive quick decision making, I have learnt that one should venture into it only after one is confident that the question being chased is absolutely clear.

The Monte Carlo technique develops scenarios, but rarely offers reliable quantitative info unless very well designed. That's why it's called Monte Carlo - you might get lucky. Bayesian Analysis is a favourite of mine as it develops probabilities from known statistics to produce new insights to dispel myths.

The popularity of the root cause analysis is matched only by its misuse. Going up to the Bing Bang for every analysis may not be of practical value. At the same time, a checkbox shallow analysis does not help either. Thumb rule: go three layers deep at a minimum, and limit to a maximum of seven.

I beleive, there are more than 50 tools to delve into deeper understanding and establish a meaningful outcome. The simplest tools could be SWOT, and there are many tools such as Mckinsey's 7S framework, BCG advantage matrix, and Porter's five force analysis etc. Essentially, scenario planning involves the following steps such as, - Identify the focal issue - Gather relevant data - Identify critical uncertainties - Construct scenarios - Develop strategies - Implement and monitor helps dealing with complex and uncertain environments, be better prepared for various eventualities.

Remember when your team would be asked to go to the next room, spend an hour, and write on the flip board future "Headings in the News" for trends - as my MBA called it - the PESTLE technique? Now you can use AI to take a few seconds, not hours, to come up with a far more interesting list of future factors that will influence your business success. However, the power of the longer scenario planning process was getting the whole team to argue over the trends together. Human interaction is the secret sauce of taking action. I experienced Scenario Planning without AI when I worked at Deloitte and it worked well. Blending in-person group discussions with AI turbo charges risk analysis. for now, we still need humans to make the decisions.

To me scenario planning is a tool for preparedness. This by no means gurantees the desired outcomes, but helps one to more clearly define the 'know' and 'unknown' worlds. To me it is like charting the sea, such that one does not loose the sight of the homing beacon, should one be stuck in the middle of a storm.

Juming into doing a Risk Assessment wihtout a clear defintion of 'Risk' in a given context and the 'Threshold' levels, to me is the biggest bane of Risk Assessment. Need of the hour is to step away from the Cartesian minds-et and adapt to Systemic way of thinking.
