In my observation I prefer more convenient and efficient way of the communication for the colocated team is a face to face meeting which include the observation of the body language and facial expression to understand the engagement of the team members and for the virtual team members there is an effective way of communication which is a video or conference call and I can prefer this over a phone call which is a more powerful tool to understand and communicate with the team.
