Social and emotional learning is a great way to support students with learning challenges. They struggle, cause their neuro-system is not functioning properly. Many times there is a life struggle behind, forcing them to operate on stress most of the time. In that state, remembering and learning is harder. By teaching them skills of emotional awareness, regulation & responsible decision-making, we support them to step out of that state and find meaning in learning. Studies found that improvement can be significant not only in learning but also in the elimination of destructive behavior (if it is present).

5 Seek feedback and learn from them

Communicating with empathy is not a one-way process. It requires ongoing dialogue and learning between you and your students. You can seek feedback and learn from them by asking them how they feel, what they need, what works for them, and what they want to improve. I would add the Pygmalion effect. Teachers can support students by believing in them and their capabilities, by encouraging them to do their best, and by letting them know they expect them to win. This effect is real and significantly increases performance and good results.
