One very interesting problem that I worked on a few years ago was Upscaling Handwritten Images (Old & Distorted). Super-Resolution is very easy using GANs, but the main issue GANs still suffer with is writing. So, upscaling handwritten content was challenging, especially when only part of the word was visible. To solve this problem, we used an NLP model to predict the missing/unreadable words in the Image, and then we used the embeddings from that model and concatenated it with the generator model of the GAN in order for it to generate that specific character at super-resolution. For example in a task like Machine Translation, metrics like Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F score don't make any sense. You have to consider a metric like "BLEU score" that is designed for that specific task. You should also check fir the latest improvements over the classics. One such example is "BERTScore" which is an improvement on BLEU. You can check sources like paperswithcode to check which metric is used for the leaderboards in the task-specific dataset.

Evaluating the performance and quality of an NLP model is crucial. Besides standard metrics like accuracy and precision, there are various methods to assess an NLP model. Don’t feel limited to just a single model. The beauty of NLP is that it can transform free text into one or more scalar numbers, e.g. inference scores in classification. These scores themselves can then be subsequently used as features into a second regression model along side other features of wider variety, using the same labels. It’s a way to homogenize the features going into the “final” model and take full advantage of the signal in the text data without making training too complicated.
