And the only way to get reliable information from them is to show them the value and build a culture of trust. You need to get them to _look forward_ to reviews. Doing so requires demonstrating to them that it is an opportunity for growth and takes a lot of radical humility and transparency. One great way I know of to do this is (gulp) to do it yourself. Find an occasion to evaluate yourself critically and honestly in front of them.
