How can you collaborate with developers to solve defects?

We have collaboration rooms set up for each of the projects through MS-Teams which enables all parties involved developer, designer and tester to collborate seamlessly as well as do live troubleshooting for blocker defects. Moreover Management is also added to such room on need basis when specific project demands a high priority and quick support

In our Automated Tests, we incorporated Screen Recording of each testcase being executed. If a certain testcase failed, we are able to see the behavior of the AUT before, during and after each step of the testcase. The Screen Recording is also attached in the submitted issue in the defect tracking tool so that developers would also see the exact steps performed when the issue occurred.

Through test automation and BDD I as a tester create an abstraction level that ensures that everyone involved understands the matter and take part in the discussion no matter what role they have. Pipelines running and testing the code help create automated bug tickets from the test report and add the to our Jira environment. Furthermore the efficiency of finding a test and resolving it, increased massively adding precise log files, screenshots and or images or videos. The level of transparency and trust within the team also effects the process of finding a bug and resolving it.

Working together as a Team, no finger pointing culture. Quality is everyone's job. Every single role has to do their part. Support each other when doubts/queries are there. A meeting is conducted with various roles to discuss the defect - agree and decide the decision on how and what to proceed with the defect. This would set the expectations, and will know what to expect by the end of the day.

The most important thing is to do efficiently what a tester does. A detail-oriented bug reporting with all the reproduction steps, what is expected, logs, severity, and priority. Then if needed one to one discussion with developers about the bug and impact can help to solve the bug.

The developer didn't intentionally put a bug there, and there is no benefit to be gained in antagonizing the developer. Work colaborativily and not competitively. Discuss openly and in a respectful manner your findings and interpretation, and be open to the possibility that you may also be wrong. Give and expect respect.

Most of the time our developers and testers think that they're against each other. But it's not true. My perspective is different. Developers and testers are for providing support to each other. Each one's work is to support and resolve conflicts before it delivered to the client and become a source of embarrassment. Mutual contribution of both is mandatory to make the software development successful for the end-user. Agile team structure makes it really useful. A team has its own tester and developer along with other roles. It makes collaboration easy and effective.

Stress that effective communication isn't just about conveying information but also about building a positive working relationship. Mention that it's essential to empathize with developers' challenges and pressures, as this can foster a more collaborative atmosphere. Encourage open dialogue, active listening, and a willingness to compromise when resolving defects, promoting a sense of teamwork. In this way, clear and respectful communication becomes a foundation for successful defect resolution.

Be sure to be testing something that is released, have the developer be aware of your priorities so that those elements are ready when you need them. Be open about your coverage, expected deadlines, etc.

Adhering to a release note process is a valuable best practice for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams. These release notes should cover essential details such as the functional areas in the release, resolved defects, configuration modifications, and outstanding issues within the code, which aids QA in meticulously strategizing their testing efforts. Another essential best practice involves organizing Dev to QA handover meetings. These meetings provide a platform for in-depth discussions about the upcoming release, thereby mitigating any ambiguity. Additionally, the QA team can leverage these meetings to review unit testing evidence, ensuring that the requisite quality gate criteria have been met before accepting the build.

Effective collaboration in software development hinges on coordination, and this holds true for testing activities. To avoid duplication, confusion, or conflicts, it's vital to coordinate testing efforts with developers. This includes planning, scheduling, prioritizing, and executing tests in a synchronized manner. Transparency is key, so inform developers about your testing scope, objectives, and criteria, and be open to their input and feedback. It's equally important to sync your testing cycles and timelines with their development cycles and deadlines, and promptly communicate any changes or issues that may impact the collaborative workflow.

This point is very important, as these kind of communication is helpful for both the QA & Developer because it gives both a better understanding of how the other person works and work together to achieve the common goal which is to resolve the defect. Collaboration does not always have to be QA & Developers only it can be with the Product Manager too because some bugs are not even Developer's mistake its just a misunderstanding from the PM on certain requirements. Communicating with developers do help in terms of certain areas in their code needed to be tested in a specific way so with these collaboration it helps the tester to understand the developer's perspective and adjust the testing strategy.

The pivotal question that every tester should think of before reporting identified issues is how to help the reduction of defect turnaround time. To facilitate easier defect review and prompt resolution within cross-functional teams, the following considerations help: 1. Use a structured defect reporting template that provides comprehensive information to support the development team. 2. Ensure that the defect report contains relevant logs, screenshots, or, in the case of web-based product testing, a brief video illustrating the issue facilitating a quicker understanding. 3. Essential information such as the test environment specifications, the test data used, and the precise date and timestamp of when the issue occurred is a must.

Be open to discussing the source of the bug. Did you interpret the requirement correctly? Is the requirement ambiguous? What caused this deffect and how can we avoid simmilar deffects in the future?How can this be fixed and when will it be fixed? These are importat questions to ask in a colaborative way.

Cooperation in defect resolution between testers and developers is akin to a symphony where each instrument plays a unique role in creating harmony. Beyond the technical aspects, effective cooperation hinges on clear communication and mutual respect. As testers, our perspective often brings a fresh set of eyes to the code, uncovering issues that might have been overlooked. Likewise, developers bring in-depth knowledge of the system's intricacies. To collaborate successfully, it's vital to foster an environment where both parties feel comfortable sharing insights, ideas, and concerns. Moreover, being open to compromise and collectively finding solutions is key to swift defect resolution.

Collaboration culminates in cooperation, a pivotal aspect in defect resolution. It entails the joint effort to attain a shared objective: resolving defects. Cooperation with developers involves the exchange of knowledge, skills, and resources. Flexibility is crucial, as one must be ready to adapt testing approaches based on the defect's context. Support and collaboration should be readily extended, offering assistance when necessary. Transparency and accountability play a key role, with the obligation to report testing results and feedback candidly and precisely. Through effective cooperation, defects can be addressed efficiently, fostering a harmonious and productive collaborative environment in software development.

When you log a defect, make sure to provide all the required details to debug the defect. If you have a strong understanding about the project architecture, do a small RCA and provide the details. Helping the developers and respecting each other's work will contribute to a healthy happy workplace!

I do have good communication with development team. For release they communicate us the release scope. Accordingly I scope testing and communicate same to development team. Bug reporting is great means of communication for us. Detailed bug with steps to reproduce and screenshot/ screen recording helps them to fix bug quickly.

Before logging the bug, it's crucial to collaborate closely with developers to understand the issue and identify its root cause. Once all relevant information is shared, reporting the bug will result in a faster resolution. When reporting a bug, ensure to include essential elements such as logs, screenshots, video recordings with reproduction steps, and appropriately assign severity and priority levels as the general guidelines.

I don't see what I consider the two most important things mentioned, so here goes. 1. Don't run seperate QA teams, quality is not someone else's responsibility, so it should be addressed by the entire team. This means working on tests, and in fact debugging test failures, together. 2. Have your tests return meaning error messages that make debugging easy. For example, print out what was returned in an API call that failed - and make sure that the API is architected such that it can return meaningful error messages, and explicit error codes. Again, working together as one team is the most important thing.

Don't make it an us and them culture. It's a partnership of like minded peers trying to understand and fix a problem. Not two enemy camps tying to assign blame.
