First rule of communication is know your audience. And since that is your client, you need to understand everything about them - structure, history, challenges, successes. Then, talk to them about expectations around communication (because it's a two way street). What do you need as someone working with them and what do they need in order to perform their best? Establish what the cadence of communication will be. What is important for the people you are working with to know in order to keep the executive sponsors of the initiative in the know? Making sure you're in alignment with expectations up front will make all of the difference. And encourage them to speak up if those expectations need to shift.

One of the main sources of communication breakdowns is unclear or mismatched goals and expectations. To avoid this, you need to set clear and realistic goals and expectations with your client from the start. You can do this by defining the scope, deliverables, timeline, and roles of the project, and confirming them in writing. You also need to communicate any changes, issues, or risks that may affect the project as soon as possible, and negotiate solutions with your client.

Definitely set some goals and expectations as well as be open to answer any questions. For someone goals and expectations are clearly align and very straightforward but sometimes goals and expectations depend on the person point of view. While you might think that you’re living up to expectations it might not look that way. One way to fix that is to have regular check ins.

You can do this by demonstrating your expertise, creativity, and problem-solving skills, and by presenting your findings and recommendations in a clear, concise, and compelling way.
