How can you coach leaders from different generations effectively?

First, foremost, middle and last it is important to see people as people. Whilst generations may have stereotypical characterists it's important to not see people through these lenses. What's most important is to meet people where they are, respecting their differences and seeking to connect with them as humans first. Coaching across generations has to be person-centred and solution-focused.

As a seasoned business mentor, I've worked with entrepreneurs across the generations. Each generation has its own characteristics, preferences, values, and challenges that influence their entrepreneurial journey. For example, millennials are likely to start a business for social impact. Gen Z, while also focused on social impact, places emphasis on a flexible work schedule as well. However, while it's important to understand the trends of each generation, it's also important to see them as individuals. Whatever their generation, entrepreneurs want to be seen and valued as unique. They want a coach who connects with them on a personal level, respects their opinions and perspectives, and helps them achieve their goals and potential.

The old Steven Covey phrase really rings out to me more than ever when we talk about various generations backgrounds. "Seek to understand and then be understood". Each generation people of all walks of life with strengths and weaknesses but both offer value which help make the team better. I find the best way when a potential conflict comes up is asking the person to tell a story behind the issue they are facing. During the story you really get to Connect more learning a lot about them and build a relationship of trust, transparency, & communication. As a result this has made it fairly easy to work with most people in all aspects regardless of any generational gap.

Start with the shared values of the organization, then the personal values of the individual. Values serve as a North Star when coaching anyone from any generation.

As a global leadership and team coach, I've learned the value of avoiding assumptions based on generational stereotypes or culture. It's crucial to approach leaders with an open mind and dedicated time to understand their unique strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Equally vital is for leaders to cultivate cross-generational awareness. Global DISC assessments provide invaluable insights, analyzing perspectives, work styles, and communication preferences of team members from different generations in a non-judgmental manner. This facilitates neutral and constructive discussions, fostering collaboration and minimizing conflicts for a successful environment.

All powerful coaching requires adaptability. While coaches need to be aware of generational tendencies, they need to tailor their approaches to the individual, or group, they're coaching. This includes adapting the format, how active you are as a coach, the number and nature of questions you ask, even the type of assignments you give a coachee. It's easy to make assumptions, e.g. Gen Z prefers zoom while Boomers like in person coaching, Gen Z is more likely to prefer TikTok and YouTube over books, and Millennials and Gen Z want to partner with socially conscious companies. Yet, it's important not to rely on stereotypes. Coaches should ask for feedback and communicate openly with coachees to understand their unique needs and expectations.

Regardless of a persons age, in a spirit of curiosity I look for certain values that can be indicative of an age when people did absolutely not talk about their feelings. I have started to bring an IFS perspective to each encounter. I listen for the messages that a client hears within themselves, and then gently enquire as to the source of this message value or belief that might be hindering effective communication with colleagues across three generations of experience. In this way we can begin to see the parts in their original roles, and work with them. Giving them the space to be heard recognised and ultimately accepted.

Instead of following a rigid coaching style, I prioritize understanding leaders' preferred meeting methods - be it virtual, on-site, or hybrid. Active listening, without assumptions, is paramount. Creating an inclusive work environment involves seeking input from diverse age groups and considering their unique needs when making decisions. Ongoing learning and development for coaches and leaders of all generations is crucial. To coach multi-generational leaders effectively, I make sure I regularly establish mechanisms for knowledge sharing between generations. Mentorship programs and cross-generational collaboration can help me gain valuable experience and expertise that I can transfer to leaders later on.

If you are actually skilled at coaching the difference in generation shouldn’t matter. Also, the tools mentioned above won’t identify generational differences but simply differences between people!

My favorite compliment from clients and potential clients is "You get me like no one else does." Often followed by "I know you can help me." or "You really helped me finally achieve (fill in the blank)." Transformation takes place in relationship and building trust, rapport, and confidence is the foundation of a powerful coaching relationship. While there are generational triggers for building – or destroying – trust and rapport, essential for all generations is developing the ability to 1. be present, 2. listen – and hear – deeply, and 3. be discerning without being judgmental. Enjoying your coachee, and showing genuine interest, respect, confidence, and empathy are potent factors especially when crossing generations."

In my own experience, listening to understand the leader's perspective and their unique challenges is the most important and most meaningful starting point regardless of the leader's age. In the end, we are always dealing with a human being across the table/screen, and human beings want to be heard, seen, and understood. So, let's start there and build a foundation of trust and respect on which miracles can happen.

100% agree! The foundation of any effective coaching relationship is connection. Some relationships take longer to foster and that’s ok. But as leaders/coaches, we must be able to adapt, and be the best coach that’s needed for that individual; regardless of generational differences. Often times the coaching relationship is a 2 way learning experience!

Coaching at all levels and for all generations is a relationship based business. One of my favorite experiences is always learning something new - from someone with deep professional experience or from someone newer to the workplace. By cultivating curiosity in building coaching relationships among others we build in vulnerability and trust. Also, showing appreciation for all perspectives is so important. I am a student of the science of gratitude and specifically, The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace. When people authentically and accurately show appreciation for one another they build rapport and trust even before it is "needed."

One of the most important steps to bridging gaps with different generations (or any client, for that matter) is to demonstrate interest in them. Ask questions; not just the typical coaching questions, but questions designed to truly get to know someone. Be curious, and demonstrate your interest in them. This demonstrates respect, which helps bridge gaps and take coachees from potentially being on the defensive - to being more open and coachable.

Generational differences can sometimes lead to gaps in communication, understanding, and collaboration. As a life coach and soft skills trainer, I've found it valuable to help bridge these gaps by fostering open dialogue and highlighting the unique strengths that each generation brings to the table. For example, Baby Boomers' wealth of experience and traditional leadership skills can be invaluable to younger generations. Gen Xers' adaptability and problem-solving skills can contribute to innovation and efficiency. Millennials' technological fluency and collaborative spirit can drive creativity and teamwork. And Gen Z's entrepreneurial spirit and social consciousness can bring fresh perspectives and a commitment to positive change.

One of the most important thing is to Identify and Appreciate Differences: Encourage leaders to understand and appreciate the unique perspectives, values, and work styles that each generation brings to the workplace. Build an environment where differences are seen as valuable assets rather than obstacles. You need to develop cross-generational skills with build with them not for them. Here is an opportunity to develop team work.

Ultimately to keep things simple - there’s only really one gap. Everything else is a byproduct of that gap. The gap is: Where are they now -> where do they want to be. Now it’s just a matter of working backwards from there. Asking skilled questions. Peeling back layer by layer like an onion ?? to get to the heart ?? of everything. Once you’re there -> it’s easy to find solutions rather than problems.

Effective coaching involves both challenging and supporting your clients. Challenge them to step outside their comfort zones, to think critically, and to push their limits. At the same time, provide them with the support and guidance they need to navigate challenges, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals. Remember, coaching is not about dictating solutions or imposing your own agenda. It's about empowering leaders to discover their own strengths, develop their own strategies, and achieve their own goals

One way I like to challenge leaders is for them to be the one that champions others accomplishments and show up for their colleagues the way they want them to show up for them.

Agree but HOW you challenge them will vary from person to person. For example Are they sensitive Do they have a big ego Are they coachable Do they want the feedback A good way to assess this if it’s not clear is to ask them “OK. I can see why you might think that. Is it ok / do you mind if I challenge you on that?” I’ve never been told “no” Most people want the help.

If you take a systemic coaching approach, challenging his comfort zone really matters. It's about looking at how interactions affect growth. Trying to recognize the usual patterns and opening up to fresh perspectives. Understanding one's role in a network helps spot behaviors that limit someone. Once you have that insight, it's about embracing new strategies. This approach can lead to courageous actions and meaningful developments. It’s about daring to change and growing through it.

Regular evaluation and follow-up are essential for ensuring that your coaching efforts are having a positive impact. Set clear goals and expectations at the beginning of the coaching relationship, and regularly check in with your clients to assess their progress and provide ongoing support. Celebrate their successes along the way, and offer constructive feedback when needed. By providing ongoing guidance and support, you can help your clients achieve lasting change and growth.

In my experience this is cross-generational. Some coachees will be highly organized and you won't have much to do to follow-up as a coach as they will take the lead. Others will benefit from gentle suggestions about the best way to follow-up, the best tools, the best time. That is a coaching topic in itself, to help the coachee discover evaluation and follow up, and own it. This is more approaching the personality traits of people than generations. As you

The whole 'generational differences' perspective is flawed. Coaches wouldn't dream of suggesting that women or Catholics or Polish people be coached inherently differently from others. But somehow is acceptable to suggest that people born in arbitrarily defined generations be treated in different ways. It's bonkers. Coaches treat people as individuals with their own needs and characteristics. When are we going to retire this generational divide obsession?

As a coach, I strongly believe in the value of practicing what I preach. When emphasizing the significance of inclusive communication and advising leaders to train in various communication tools and techniques, including digital communication, to bridge generation gaps in an ever-evolving virtual workplace, it is crucial for me to lead by example. By doing so, I am demonstrating my unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. Only through firsthand experience can I truly impart my expertise and effectively guide others towards success.

The inner dynamics of the coach are a vital but often overlooked factor in building trust and rapport. These include the coach’s self-awareness, personality, nervous system regulation, traumas and life experiences. The coach’s own issues of trust, confidence, closeness, or control can interfere with their ability to create a trusting and close relationship with the client, or to help their client achieve good health, relationships, or success. The coach may also have biases or triggers based on their past or present associations, which can affect their rapport, trust, coaching style, or even the outcomes they're clients achieve. This is why coaches need to work on themselves, heal their traumas, and seek consultation on client cases.

Sometimes being a coach is more about listening ?? than speaking ??. I’ve often found being a mentor and a good sounding board is far more beneficial. Many a times I’ve spoken to business leaders, and candidates, that have great ideas and enthusiasm, and who clearly have a ‘plan’, and they just need to thrash it out in a safe environment. Yes helping them refine the plan helps also!

Alle Menschen einer Alterskohorte (Generation) in einen Topf zu stecken, wird der Einzigartigkeit nicht gerecht.
