1 Selective racking

This means you can easily retrieve or store any pallet without moving others, which reduces handling time and damage. Selective racking is also adaptable to different pallet sizes and weights, and can be configured in single or double rows. However, selective racking requires more aisle space than other systems, which reduces the storage density and may increase the cost of floor space.

2 Drive-in and drive-through racking

Drive-in and drive-through racking are high-density storage systems that allow forklifts to drive into or through the racks and place or pick up pallets from multiple levels. These systems are ideal for storing large quantities of similar or low-rotation products, as they maximize the use of vertical and horizontal space. However, they also limit the accessibility and selectivity of the pallets, as they operate on a first-in, last-out (FILO) or first-in, first-out (FIFO) basis. Therefore, they are not suitable for products that have a short shelf life or require frequent stock rotation.

4 Pallet flow racking

Pallet flow racking is a dynamic storage system that uses gravity and rollers to move pallets from one end of the rack to the other. When a pallet is loaded onto the rack, it slides down the inclined rails to the front, where it can be picked up by a forklift. When a pallet is unloaded, the next pallet moves forward automatically, creating a continuous flow of pallets. Pallet flow racking can store up to 20 pallets deep per level, which maximizes the storage density and minimizes the number of aisles. It also ensures a FIFO stock rotation, which is ideal for products that have a short shelf life or require strict inventory control.

Cantilever racking is a specialized storage system that uses horizontal arms attached to vertical columns to store long or bulky items, such as pipes, lumber, or furniture. Cantilever racking eliminates the need for vertical supports or beams, which increases the storage capacity and the accessibility of the items. It also allows for flexible adjustment of the arm length and height, which can accommodate different sizes and shapes of the items. However, cantilever racking requires more floor space than other systems, and may not be suitable for heavy or fragile items that need more support.
