How can you choose the right IT certification?

You'll normally excel at what you love to learn and do. That maxim has been around forever, and it's been proven to be true time and again. A keen interest in a technology field is a huge motivator towards learning and success. If you have multiple interests, it pays to identify your favorite specialty because given the nature of these certifications, you should focus on one application at a time. And whatever you do, be sure to research sample certification tests and review the material. Too often novices get a romanticized idea of what a tech field is like and dabbling in sample test material will provide much needed insight.

My first certification in the early 90’s was a CNA for Novell networks. This certification was relevant to the network I was supporting, so it made sense. I haven’t used that Certification since. The products changed. However, the knowledge gained helped me understand the architecture of these new products. Now, I focus my time that I dedicate to learning to those underlying principles that will continue to help build new products. Networking, IP Subnetting and Routing, LAN, WAN, IoT Connectivity are always great to learn. Sure, there are tools that help in todays IT world but understanding it without those tools allows you to hit a whiteboard and quickly resolve or plan future state networks. In my experience I seek help of others that already have the certs I am seeking and maybe a level or two above. I choose certifications and badges that further my understanding in topics I have a foundation in already.

Your certification path doesn't end once you've passed. Be sure to strategize how best to leverage your accomplishment to support your goals. Also, make sure you're following professional and ethical standards set by your certification's governing body such as maintaining your knowledge through continuing education and being a role model within your profession.

Keep an eye on the expiration date of certifications, and what kind of upkeep it will take to maintain. Such as continuing education credits or exams you have to take before it expires.

Once you narrow down the certificate/s needed, assess costs and payment options to prioritize which certificate to pursue first. When finances and bandwidth are a blocker to pursuing a certificate, consider going for the others on you list that may be less pricy or less involved to start with. They will still equip you with new skills and help boost your resume when job searching. Having any relevant certificate to the industry and the type of role you're seeking is better than none. A lot of times, if you're already employed with an IT company, they may also have funds allocated to reimburse certain certification types. Make some enquiries before paying for certifications out of pocket.
